Being sick on the road

A guy came in and hurriedly occupied the next stall, and the tossing of cookies commenced forthwith. Since I had already done my paperwork, I adjourned to the sinks to perform my ablution and then brush my teeth. Before I'm done, he comes out and starts washing. I'm thinking of all the germs he's tossing around while I have my toothbrush out. I'm not particularly a germaphobe, but with the flu bug going around, it's something you've got to consider. Having the flu sucks anywhere, but in winter, on the road, in a cold van has to be the worst. Fortunately, he seemed to be cognizant of this and didn't even stop to dry his hands, so I didn't have to worry about germs on the towel dispenser.

Been a couple years since I've had the flu, so I'm probably due...

Last year we contracted bronchitis and Nick pneumonia. We holed up in a hotel for a week. Best decision hands down. As for throwing up, honestly it happens to me regularly since having my gallbladder out without being ill.

I think I brushed my teeth in a truckstop bathroom once or twice. Never again.

Read a book about firemen years ago, written by one about life as a fireman. He said the graffiti on the wall in their bunkhouse bathroom read: THE BRAVEST MEN IN NEW YORK" then below it, someone added, "...brush their teeth while (name of fireman) takes a dump."

Oh, and he didn't mention anything about hosing down innocent bystanders trying to take a picture, though he did mention it was fun to break car windows on cars blocking the fire hydrant and pass the hose through the windows from the hydrant to the building.

Kind of a lame, backhanded, personal pot-shot. No need for that sort of thing, is there?

I'm referring to the post directly above my reply. It might not be an obvious personal attack to most, but it's there just the same, and it's uncalled for.

As to the poor gentleman who was vomiting it is likely that his problem was caused by the 'norovirus' Although commonly called the "stomach flu" it is a virus not related to the one that causes influenza, other wise known as the flu. That virus causes respiratory illnesses as opposed to the acute gastroenteritis that the norovirus causes.

Being that firemen were brought up...perhaps weak, but fun to say. If he'd have at least allowed that maybe he was wrong for hosing the guy down and that maybe his emotions got the better of him, I'd find it easier to drop. But no, he maintained that he essentially had the right to hose the guy down and ruin the camera. So, yeah, it's kind of a sore spot.

Being that firemen were brought up!? Who was it who brought firemen up in this thread in the first place? Oh, yeah, that's right, it was yooouuuuuuu.

Keep in contained within the original thread where the topic was brought up and it's not a cheap pot shot. Spread it around the forum in unrelated threads, and it'll get you in trouble.

I love the sink in my truck. It's been a very, very long time since I've brushed my teeth when I'm 6 feet from some dude taking his morning dump.

My god how many people use the bathroom at a truck stop and you brush your teeth there. It would just be better to have water in vehicle and use a cup for the rinsing.

Even in the shower your taking chances, unless you bring in something to put the toothbrush on to keep it clean and if I ever dropped it I throw it away.

Yes, I brought up firemen, but the reference to the other individual was an afterthought. If I brought up firemen for the purpose of mentioning the other individual, that would be wrong. But again, not as wrong as assaulting someone by turning a firehouse on them.

Enough. You've stated and restated your position, at a minimum. Give it a rest now.

Thats just about the lamest statement I read on this forum.
Bystanders taking pictures are usually to close and standing in the whats called the loop. The loop is inside the line of hoses that run anywhere from 1500 pds of pressure on up to 3000pds of pressure. If they seperate or break it would decapatate someone. People don't listen so you give them a shot of water to wake them up and move. As far as a car in front of a hydrant, they are running a main line to the pumper truck of 5 inchs. 5 inch hoses don't bend and require a direct feed. If people block a hydrant in NY your insurance won't cover the damage because its against the law. Whats more important a lousy car or millions of dollars in property damage or maybe even your life. Most people don't know how hard it is to be a fire fighter much less a fire fighter in NY City. It's one of the hardest jobs in America.

The hose pressure seldom exceeds 200 psi with the average being 100-125 psi. The hose burst pressure is around 1200 psi.

But depending in the nossle used and distance, the pressure can be less than 40 psi when it hits something.

I'm not criticizing the firemen who do that. Everybody knows you can't park in front of a hydrant, so if there's a fire... But I've heard that firemen have been told not to do this any more, regardless.

I'm trying to tread lightly because I've been told to let this drop, or confine it to the thread it was in, or something. But, in response to your post about the loop, being inside the loop wasn't the reason the fireman in question gave for hosing down the photographer. It was something else entirely.

Please post the link to where you have heard that firefighters are not going to run a line where it's needs run, through a car that cannot be moved if need be. It would not make sense, supply lines have to be laid where needed. I would love to read that one to see the justification to impede operations and endanger lives and/or property.

I have laid miles (our company carried 2500' of 5" hose on our tanker, 1500" on our engine and 500" on our brush truck.) during the years that I was a volunteer. In every case we put it where fire operations dictated. There is no other way. Never had to run it through a car, but would have if need be. Did shut down LOTS of roads for HOURS with it.
