Becoming a fleet owner

There are a lot of carriers that the fsc does not cover the cost of fuel so many owners pay the 60% plus fsc. When there is a profit on fsc they suddenly change.

Our fsc doesn't cover the cost of fuel. It covers around 70-75% of our fuel costs.

Yeah I didn't realize that until after I sent that message haha. When I get some spare time I may try to start a completely new thread.

Have you researched some of the articles by Bob Caffe....they have done some great stuff towards fuel mileage...some of it might help your quest....

Oh yeah. We tried 57mph and our truck gets better at 60. A lot of the things they have done that costs money I don't think would pay off in our truck because we only plan on keeping this one in service for a year or so more. But their advise has been instrumental in helping us pick out our next truck. Hopefully we can close on it within a month or 2.

Outside of one fleet owner posting old stuff.....the rest is pretty current stuff....OLD threads are NOT necessarily a bad thing...depending on content

If you run smart, you can actually make $$$ off that FSC and pay the new truck off sooner....double whammy

I would NEVER pay drivers 60% of the load AND 100% of the fuel surcharge and all accessorials

So tell us what you consider fair and appropriate.

My system was 60% plus 100% of the fsc plus 100% of the people pay and 50% of the time pay and they pay fuel and tolls. People pay is anything paid for actual manual labor like hand load/unload. Now, if I happened to be at the same dock and helped it would be 66/34 split but that never happened. If they do the work they get the pay. Time pay is layover/detention whatever that is paying for time the truck is sitting since an hour is the same on everyone's clock.

Do you have a visor above the windshield? It doesn't cost anything to remove it and you'll gain 1/3-1/2 mpg after doing so. It will look funny compared to other trucks but the extra money in your pocket won't be funny looking at all.

I've read that about the visor and have been meaning to look at mine to see how hard it'll be to remove. Just not sure how to run those lights back into the cab.

The often mentioned 40/20/40 formula equates to 50/50 split of the load, layover, detention, and strategic moves. A careful driver can make a little money on the FSC we get, not like the carrier we moved from (E-1). If a driver wants the FSC then he takes care of the fuel completely. Hand loads and tolls are paid 100%. This would be for an experienced, careful, well referenced driver.

I've never heard of 40/20/40. Everyone I've ever talked to has used the simple 60/40. And yes, the 60 side pays all fuel in exchange for 60% plus 100% fsc.

Really??? So the 60% side is getting an extra 20% JUST for handling the nozzle????

No, the 60% side is getting all the fsc money because they are paying for all the fuel and therefore deserve all the fsc. If I as the owner were paying for all the fuel I would keep 100% of the fsc money and they'd get 40% of the load pay plus 100% of people pay and 50% of time pay. They would have no claim to or right to any of the fsc if they were paying 0% of the fuel costs just as I have no right to or claim to any of the fsc when paying 0% of the fuel costs.

So what is that 40/20/40 system you mentioned?

YES...just for handling the nozzle.....the DRIVER is paying 100 % of the fuel....you want paid to help hold that nozzle?......LOL
The FSC is paying for 100% of the fuel with the carrier we both work for... whoever takes the FSC pays for the fuel and is fully reimbursed by the FSC. Have you looked at a settlement statement lately???
