Thats tragic....

On that note though by the sound of the story and the impact and weather conditions...the teacher was going too fast....sounds like a lawsuit in the works.

Aside from the young girl in a red car, and the salesman with the cell phone in his ear, or most any vehicle with a clergy sticker on the rear window, the most senseless speeders on the highways seem to be passenger carrying vehicles such as busses and 12 passenger school and church vans. The most egregious of the group of speeders are the drivers of the vans full of youngsters whose parents place their faith in the competance of those drivers.

Sadly, it seems to be the case in Canada as well. The principal of the school said “We all are very cognizant that any time our teams travel, they put themselves at some risk.” How sad that that very principal knew the students were at risk and he apparently did nothing about it. How easy it was to blame this tragic accident on a freaky weather situation. (imagine that, an icy winter road in Canada)

After carefully reading the media accounts of this unfortunate loss of life, it serves as a stark reminder to all who drive that there is a risk when we venture out on the road.

The driver of the van had a spotless driving and was operating the van at a speed warranted by the existing conditions; just as most of us do each and every day.

How many times have all of us been driving at a safe speed only to hit a patch of ice that might have been created by blowing snow. The road had been dry for 100 miles and then suddenly you crest a small rise and the backside of that hill has a hidden patch of ice.

Prescott, who is also principal of Riverview High in Riverview, N.B., said school officials are always aware of the potential dangers of driving long distances with teams this time of year.

We all are very cognizant that any time our teams travel, they put themselves at some risk,” he said.

“Weather varies from one region of the province to another and all coaches or assistant coaches take as much safety precautions as is humanly possible to ensure the safety of the student athletes who are entrusted to them.”
