How many of us are old enough to remember this speech, who made it and when?

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad.

Was this guy spot on, considering today's economic and social problems or what? Do you remember him yet? He continued:

You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, G**d***it! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

Congratulations if your answer was Howard Beale, the newscaster from the movie Network made in 1976. Fast forward 34 years, and the timeliness of this monologue is almost spooky; all you have to do is substitute "Mexicans" for the word "Russians" in the first paragraph and this speech could be made tomorrow without changing a thing except perhaps the reference to inflation - and for that we could substitute "national debt".

The Tea Partiers are demonstrating the manifestations of Beale's emotions - these normally laid back everyday people have decided not to take it any more, although they're not yelling out their windows yet. The mainstream media and the liberal Dems are obviously scared silly by the potential of this grassroots movement, thus their constant effort to berate them and label them as "wackos". These efforts will fail.

The real problems will arise when the good people of Arizona and some other areas finally go beyond being fed up with the corruption and incompetence of the Federal Govt. that's supposed to protect them from these illegal Mexican invaders and drug dealers. They'll start forming vigilante groups to deal with the human debris that's pouring over the border and defiling their farmlands, ranches and city streets. That's what happens when law abiding citizens get mad as hell and decide they're not going to take it any more.

You want spooky timeless?

"The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

More from Howard Beale - I've added emphasis to the parts that especially apply to today's society and mainstream media.
A rich little man with white hair died. What has that got to do with the price of rice, right? And why is that woe to us? Because you people, and sixty-two million other Americans, are listening to me right now. Because less than three percent of you people read books! Because less than fifteen percent of you read newspapers! Because the only truth you know is what you get over this tube. Right now, there is a whole, an entire generation that never knew anything that didn't come out of this tube! This tube is the Gospel, the ultimate revelation. This tube can make or break presidents, popes, prime ministers... This tube is the most awesome G*d-d**ned force in the whole godless world, and woe is us if it ever falls in to the hands of the wrong people, and that's why woe is us that Edward George Ruddy died. Because this company is now in the hands of CCA - the Communication Corporation of America.* There's a new Chairman of the Board, a man called Frank Hackett, sitting in Mr. Ruddy's office on the twentieth floor. And when the twelfth largest company in the world controls the most awesome G*d-da**ed propoganda force in the whole godless world, who knows what s**t will be peddled for truth on this network?
Network (1976) - Memorable quotes

*Until Dec 2009, NBC was owned by Gen. Electric - the 5th largest corporation in the US at the time they sold 51% control to Comcast. GE still holds 49% of the shares.

"...and woe is us if it ever falls in to the hands of the wrong people."
Of course Beale was afraid of the network being controlled by the evil capitalists and industrial tycoons. The irony is that the major "mainstream" networks are now controlled by left-wing political liberal entertainers who allow their bias to influence all aspects of their programming, not just the news. The last sentence is especially prescient considering some of the so-called investigative reporting in the recent past, both political (remember Dan Rather?) and non-political (NBC's exploding Chevy pickups).

"This tube can make or break presidents...". One need look no farther than the current occupant of the White House to see proof of this statement's accuracy. The gullible, the naive and the ignorant - those who get their truth from the tube - were convinced that Barack Hussein Obama was their saviour. The media never offered an objective analysis of this candidate that would have revealed his overwhelming weaknesses and his radical liberal political philosophy. Thus, he was "made" by the media. Now that they can't hide or mitigate his incompetence in both foreign and domestic issues, they will "break" him just as they did Jimmy Carter.

For those of you who haven't seen "Network" here's a couple of clips with the monologues I've mentioned. Since good movies are few and far between right now, it's well worth the trip to Blockbuster. Incidently, Peter Finch won an Oscar for the role of Howard Beale.

Might things be different now? I forget who said it, but it was observed, "The problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of 'other people's money.'"

We're getting close to that point, it looks like.

It was also said a long time ago that democracy ends as soon as the have-nots come to the realization that they can vote themselves "free stuff".

Too bad our illustrious neo-marxist president never read that.

"The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."
- Sometimes attributed to Alexis de Toqueville

Another variation:
"This is the Hard Core of Freedom" by Elmer T. Peterson in The Daily Oklahoman (9 December 1951): "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."

Here's another good one that's appropriate for the times:

"It's not an endlessly expanding list of rights — the 'right' to education, the 'right' to health care, the 'right' to food and housing. That's not freedom, that's dependency. Those aren't rights, those are the rations of slavery — hay and a barn for human cattle."
- P. J. O'Rourke, in Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut‎ (1996), p. 227

Our very own Chefdennis.....the Fox News of EO. Please, just an ounce of integrity and honesty when starting threads please.

Yeap, its theirs for the taking and barrys minions are warning American citizens to stay out and off the land...80 miles inland...3 counties deep into arizona.....

Fish and Wildlife Service debunks "ludicrous" Fox report that Obama gave "Major Strip" of AZ to Mexico

In the June 15 report, America Live guest host Shannon Bream says, "A massive stretch of Arizona now off limits to Americans. Critics say the administration is, in effect, giving a major strip of the Southwest back to Mexico."

There are a few problems with this: A representative of the refuge told Media Matters that the "massive stretch" of land is about five miles square, it's been closed since 2006, and it obviously hasn't been given back to Mexico.

Bonnie Swarbrick, who is the public information officer for the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona, said that the area in the refuge bordering Mexico was "closed in 2006 during the construction of a vehicle barrier." (That would have been more than two years before Obama even took office). Work on the vehicle barrier progressed into the construction of a 12-foot fence along the part of the refuge that borders Mexico, which is about seven miles long. The area has been kept closed "to allow the Border Patrol to do their work," she said.

Swarbrick added that the small strip of land that is closed makes up "less than 0.03 percent" of the refuge and said that the rest of the reserve is still open to the public.

As for the Fox Nation headline, Swarbrick called it "totally false" and said the notion that America had given the land back to Mexico is "ludicrous."

Take a gander if you please.

Who wants to bet there's more to this story yet to be revealed? I'd be willing to go along with the idea that FNS and Shannon Bream have been caught with their knickers down if it hadn't been for her interview with Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu in which he pretty much confirmed the area she was talking about was closed or at least had warning signs posted. If what the FWS is now claiming is true, he would have certainly been aware of the boundaries of the off limits area, and that it was much smaller than what she was describing to him; no doubt he would have corrected her to maintain his own credibility.

Considering the relationship the Obama administration has with Fox News, it wouldn't be surprising for them to concoct a response to discredit them. By the way, Fox didn't say they had given the land back to Mexico - listen to the quote: "...critics say that the administration is IN EFFECT giving a major strip of the Southwest back to Mexico". At any rate it will be interesting to see if they have a response or a mea culpa. Right now they only have an article posted on their website.

The more important point than whether it's Fox News or anything else is why is any part of our nation closed to our citizens due to actions of other nationals? Why isn't our military tasked with securing our borders? Why don't we absolutely lock down our borders and eliminate all illegal intruders as soon as they enter? We shouldn't be giving up even 0.00000000000000000000000011% of sovereign U.S. soil for any reason under any circumstances.

Can you come up with an intelligent response?

Seriously? I could have asked you the same question. Your comment was absurd, wildly paranoid and mixed with conspiracy theories that would even make Beck cringe. My comment was based on facts, which of course I understand is treated like the other "F" word in this forum.

It is about Fox and it is about the title of the original post. The President is not giving part of Arizona back to Mexico.

Nice deflection though.

I'll ask again - can you come up with an intelligent response? You obviously don't understand the post I submitted that was clearly stated and BASED ON THE SHANNON BREAM REPORT. DID YOU EVEN SEE THE SHANNON BREAM REPORT??
Apparently not, because unsourced picture you inserted evidently came from the Fox Nation website which is different from FoxNews.com. Nowhere in the Bream report was a picture like that to be found, although they did clearly outline the area in question and the closed off area is boldly identified and marked in yellow at the bottom of the picture. You're not on the same page as Chef's original link or the subject matter in my post dealing with the comments of the Pinal County Sheriff, and you're not basing your response on the subject matter I addressed. Perhaps I should have stated "Bream didn't say they had given the land back to Mexico...". But in segments like that one Fox and Bream are usually considered one and the same.

I realize the modus operandi of liberals is to invoke ridicule and name calling at the first opportunity, but at least try to keep the discussion within the boundaries of the original subject matter.

Fox Nation first ran the headline, "Obama gives back major strip of AZ to Mexico".

Then we had Shannon Bream on Fox News America Live report state: "A massive stretch of Arizona now off limits to Americans. Critics say the administration is, in effect, giving a major strip of the Southwest back to Mexico." Right around 9 to 10 seconds into the interview.

As for the Fox Nation headline, Swarbrick called it "totally false" and said the notion that America had given the land back to Mexico is "ludicrous."

I didn't even mention the video that was shown in the Bream interview that was showing illegals scaling the fence. Take a close look, its from 2006.

If you want to talk about the problem we have on the border fine but if you want to defend Fox and blame Obama and his administration for the problem that has existed before he took office, then go back to watching Fox.

I've never said where my loyalties lie with either party, so for you to call me a liberal because I pointed out what Chef posted and what Fox was trying to "report" (if you can call it reporting) then you my friend do not have a clue. Just because I choose to find out the facts instead of mindlessly taking in the crap that Fox throws out there doesn't make me a liberal.

I asked if you were joking when you came back with one article from Fox News, when we already had the Breem interview and the Fox Nation headlines. Then you question my intelligence? I better let you go, Beck is starting in 5 minutes.

This problem on the border HAS been going on for YEARS. Obama has NOT closed the border either. He is not doing his job of protecting this Nation, EITHER! He is too busy doing things that are NOT his job, like extorting money from private companies, health care and who know what else. He is NOT protecting and controlling the borders, that IS his job. He SHOULD be made to do that job or he should leave office.
