Yup... I love it how owner/operators look down on drivers who drive for someone else, and how truckers with sleepers look down on day cab drivers, and how people with their own authority look down on those who are leased on to a carrier. Like any of that matters.

Well, at least my perch includes an actual CDL. Yeah, I know, it's a Class C, but hey, some of'em out here don't even have that. <snicker>

And how those working with a large carrier look down on those working with a small carrier.. and how those with new trucks look down on those with old trucks.. and how those with big trucks look down on those with small trucks.. and how the republicans look down on the democratcs.. and and and the list goes on.. and onnnnnnnnnn.

I was going to say I think it's a 'man' thing.. like, 'mine is bigger than yours', or whatever.. but maybe not.

At any rate, why can a person not come here to our friendly little expediting community, and post sensitive and personal stuff without getting blasted with people's opinions of what they believe the writer's shortcomings are, and how the writer could've done better, and what the writer should've done differently, and how the writer could do it better in the future?

Some of these things are not always within a person's control, unfortunately. There are many, many factors at play.

And just because someone posts their first post, doesn't mean they're new to the industry, or even new to EO. Maybe they were actually doing better than some others, if measured in exacts.

Lots and lots of EO members come here and read, and never post, and you can surely see why. They're accused of being fake people, posting fake stories, and then bashed for their perceived shortcomings.

Let's not use someone's misfortune as an opportunity to promote our own (real or imagined) excellence. It's obviously too late for this player to be getting advice on how to run his business. Too bad he/she was perhaps hesitant to post when they could've used the help. And if he/she had, would they have received the help? Or would they have been slammed down by those who want to promote their own (perceived) success?

NObody has ALL the answers. And even the right answers don't ALways work. And even the BEST carrier doesn't stay the best forever. I think we could all afford to choke back a big dose of humility sometimes, and realize there is much to be learned, and the learning doesn't just stop. One day you might be fortunate enough to have ALL the answers, but the next day, things will change.

Oh and another thing? Speaking of success... success is in the eye of the beholder. One person's success is another person's failure. You really have to know you're talking Granny Smith apples to Granny Smith apples, before one can compare one's success to another's. One person's success might be if they happen to have a paid in full beater, and they live in their truck, and maybe they even have another source of income, and because they can tow the line and keep on remaining amongst the living, they're successful, in their own minds. Others might have truck payments and mouths to feed and homes to support, and their notion of success is to come out of the year with enough profit to be comparable to having a 'real job'. And yet others are somewhere in between. Some trade off on low income, so they can remain self employed because it beats punching a clock somewhere. Others pack it in because they looked upon expediting as a viable alternative to an income, and it didn't work out to pay enough.

Let's stop scaring the newbies away!

Let's face the reality that a lot of expediters have a genuine fear of speaking up on here, because the consequences can be large, and real. There are obvious reasons why people make special email addresses and nicks, just so they can post anonymously, and without fear of reprisal. And even when they do, I believe they're still hesitant to post.

Ok, rant over. Gotta go. I hear someone callin me to get outta the pool.

Oh, and btw, welcome Poorboy, and karatekid, hope you stick around.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa nobody loves me! It's all some one else's fault! Why post a false address, does EO.com care who you drive or drove for?

I'm not very bright, BUT unless it was a single load that paid $6000.00 I would have stopped driving when the first payment was over due.

one thing nice about this post ,is that we can all learn from his mistakes ,and try to avoid doing it in the future .
this is not personal ,
it is a good tool we can all use to better do business .
if not for EO , where else you can go to fined this kind of information , it's priceless .
some of the posters out here ,have many many years of experience ,running a good solid expeditors business , and in my book are consider to be EXPERT ,their input when facing a total loss of someone business is very mach appreciated ,
with about 50 posters on this thread and about 1,200 entry's ,it's obvious that many are learning from this guy misfortune ,including me .

Anyone with any experience in this biz knew this day was coming....not IF it came, but WHEN...that day is here...if you ran on a wing and a prayer that things would change for the better...it's a rude awakening....many an owner/driver that ignored the facts now has to deal with the short comings...for many it's its too late...Others are struggling to tread water....othersw are gone....

For me the Sprinter investment has paid off in spades....with a carrier that pushes the virtues of sprinters to the shippers and we are taking more and more C loads then ever it seems as shippers cut costs....

Let's stop scaring the newbies away!

Should that be the concern? Or, should it be sharing honest opinions and info? Does this newb need a hug, or would tough love be more appropriate? I would suggest the latter.

He opens his first post blaming the company he won't name for his woes. 2nd and 3rd posts continue to blame the company. In the 4th, he assures us his kids are O.K. and mentions that he didn't always make the right choices. There is evidence of that when he said that he spent $9300 dollars to stay with this company in the 4th quarter of '08. I saw nothing in his posts to suggest his situation is anything but his fault.

If frank discussions of reality scares some people off, maybe they're not suited to be in this business. Yeah, it ain't rocket brain surgery. But, it IS a business and requires responsible decision making. I'd rather have the newbs find a place they can come for good info. Grandmas are better suited for giving hugs.

The best advice to give a newbie or anyone else joining this community is... Look at how the best o/o or fleet drivers are doing and copy or emulate them. You may find some things don't quite work perfectly for you so alter it a bit. Remember they have a winning formula and make money.

I used to tell this to all the newbies I hired when I was a manager at a courier company. Of course all said ok and great etc but only a few followed the advice and actually became decent drivers. The rest of course tried their own thing and some did alright but most complained and quit because they did not make the bucks or felt they were treated badly by dispatch.

We are in an bad time and unfortunately we are seeing the price war run amok. The best thing is probably mixing a load of expedite and ltl if you have time to grab both going the same direction (I know hard to do sometimes). I do know a company that does this exact thing, but for them it can and does work as being canuck they have to bring the truck back across the boarder so while waiting for an expedite load they grab a couple of ltl loads and even if no expedite load at least the truck gets something towards fuel to come back.

I've see some bad prices lately. In fact I did one this past week that worked out to only .51/mile for all miles (big dh on it). Did I make something? Yes but not a lot obviously but unfortunately had to be covered. I got it as I have a fuel efficient van and could at least come out a little ahead.

True on the above about stopping when the first payment was overdue.

How ever didnt they say they had been here for some time
and since this place can trace ISP let the Dreamer trace the ISP and tell all whom the this sad and unfortuniate happing has happend to.
I believe this happend because of a combination of both economy and Company.

Things are getting tough out there
I'm with RJR transport and they are 6-7 weeks behind on payroll that is in addition to the normal 3 week delay after delivery of load.
may have to switch carriers. They say that they are using comdata to factor invoices, and comdata has not paid them, so they can't pay us, however the fuel card still works and they are still taking out the truck escrow on each payroll statement. they send me email statements of payroll but are only making small incremental payments to bank.
getting less than 150.00 a week on 3700 past due.
