Back Hauls

I’d appreciate opinions /comments concerning this subject.
Each of us has accepted loads when delivered have sat for indefinite periods of time, which soon became unprofitable. Perhaps we could become relocated if the gods of dispatch looked upon us with us with favor. If not we sat to contemplate our fate while second guessing our decisions.
What if it were possible to call an office informing them of your ETA and destination, which trigger one or more of the following events to take place.
(a) Potential “Backhauls†would be searched for your consideration according to your listed desired requirements i.e. Direction of travel once loaded.
(b) You would be offered choices as to payment for the load depending upon your status i.e. having your own authority or working through your respective company and paying the customary 15% for their providing insurance, collection etc.

Rather then attempting to burden this initial thread with details, I invite those interested to submit questions and or concerns and I’ll try to handle each one as they are presented.
I would encourage e-mailing me privately to help us clarify issues which then would be posted for all to view and respond.

Bab, we do what you question about on a daily basis, if there is not a need for expedite and our trucks have a need to move. There is nothing new or revolutinary in your question. Not much to discuss. Most, however, won't/don't have the ability to "find" freight for their trucks. The worst part of you plan is, the enivitable whine at the drivers end of the phone after spending considerable time assembling a load/s that don't pay expedite rate. Nature of the beast.

You need to come up with a different term. The term, "back haul", seems to produces am image of an owner\driver who will accept lower rate to get where he\she needs to go.Why would a load from Dallas to Detroit pay less than the same load going the other way?

The load from Dallas to Detroit may be hauled cheaper because of less freight going out and more vehicles wanting to get back to the freight lanes for expedite.

Generally, expedite would be higher, but not always. Competition, location it is going, and from where determine the rate.
The differences on a expedite verses a LTL can be alittle or alot.

EO is an Open Forum where we are never burdened with details. We discuss issues ad nauseum, go off topic and beat an issue to death, then move on to a new topic and return to old topics again and again. We each learn from the experience and from the thoughts of others. We would not want to burden you with PMs and E-Mails, so discuss away.

I personally dont do back haul loads per say, those loads that would get me back to the expedite hot zones.I would rather eat the dead head, and take a chance I get an expedite load on way to my new layover.
when I accept a load,I already have an idea where my next load will be comming from, and if the load I'm offered doesnt pay enough for me to deliver and reload, then that is one reason for my turn down
this works for me,but I'm not saying this will work for all.

>What would be the difference in cents between a backhaul and
>an expedited load for lets say a s/t or t/t?
I cant say about straight truck, but a back haul load for a tractor, would not compare with what I get for an expedite load, not even ltl is close
