The Arizona Department of Public Safety is providing an $80,000 grant to Mesa to purchase two SUVs specially equipped with computers and printers for full-time commercial vehicle inspection. The vehicles are expected to be in use on the roadways this year.
An officer must attend an 80-hour school and make 32 inspections annually to stay certified.
Several Valley law enforcement agencies are participating in the task force, including Peoria, Scottsdale, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Buckeye, the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the state motor vehicle department.
