We will be working over the holiday. Not by choice. But out of desire to serve our Air Force.
Today we picked up two thrust reversers for one of their C-17 Globemasters. They are going back to be redone and then placed back in service on the waiting aircraft. The reverser acts as a braking device on each engine. The Globemaster is designed to land and stop on extremely short runways for the size and weight of the craft. Plus roll in reverse on its own eliminating the need for tugs.
The Globemaster is the workhorse of air supply movers for our military. To see these reversers actually working, watch the video on this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNRXAHasFvk. Watch the side of the engine when it lands. You will see the reverser slide open, diverting the thrust from the rear to the sides and out at a forward angle. This creates the braking action needed to stop the aircraft.
For an idea on how big the reverser is, the two rear crates on my deck are the reversers, The crates are 110" x 98" x 116" and the reverser just barely fits inside.
Without disclosing the actual location we loaded at, I can tell you there must have been 25-30 of these aircraft surrounding us. Totally awesome site!!!
