Are You Prepared For a Stolen Truck?

When I get my Sprinter I'll consider downgrading, if necessary, from the MB to Dodge or Freightliner badging.

thank you ateam. we need more post like yours.

What I like about your solution is the low-tech approach that makes it available to anyone. You are never more than a day away from your "recovery box." You don't need the internet or a computer to get things started. It's simple and brilliant in its simplicity.

We also use the aircuff, but I had forgotten why we had purchased it! How funny brought up old memories.

It was for Pffizer loads. Remember when all the Solos were getting jacked when coming out of Parrsippany. That's what they were for before they went to Teams, & than lost the account.

ateam thank you for this post it has got me thinking what i would do if truck was a total loss.
This crazy hillbilly is going to make up a care package for myself.
1 few hundred dollars
2 day planner with all contact and pass codes needed
3 debit card, checkbook
4laptop with gps
5pens paper, invoices, stamps, envelopes
6 varius certificates
7passport card
8photo copies of cdl, birth certificate, social security.
all placed in a next day box prepaid and givin to somebody i trust alot. so when i make the call from somewhere usa i can be up and running next day.

What happens if the box gets lost?

greg lost box ?
this box is your life line. you better choose wisely who you give
it to.
if you meant lost in the mail = short answer your screwed.

ateam we hillbillies like it simple. not everybodies box will be the same though. a drivers, a o/o, and a independant's box would have different things.

Screwed is a very big understatement.

I would recommend you read about my post again, carefully and think about this.

There are two pieces of ID that I need to make a mess out of your life (if I was a criminal) and it may never get straight again, Oh and I'm not good at it ... so those two pieces can be any one of the following;

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security card
With any two of those items I can mess someone up and like I said I'm not good at it but imagine if someone is, they only need one and all kinds of info is available to them.

BY putting any of those in one box, you are taking a chance of a lifetime that may screw you.

NOW many will think those services that monitor your credit rating and so on will protect you but that does not provide a service for other things and can't cover things like criminal use of your passport, which even with the 'great' smart cards we have - happens.

I don't think the box is a bad idea, but there you should put things in perspective of what you need to get back home. I would think that even our great package delivery companies can not guarantee a that package when they have lost nuke material.

So what should you have in there?

A passport, not really - if you are stuck in Canada, there is a way to get back.
Birth certificate, no way - there is no need for this.
Social Security care, no - ditto.
Driver's license, well not really because that is already on record.

By the way, having a check book and credit cards is another thing.

BUT like I said it isn't a bad idea.

greg you bring up justifiable concerns. my purpose is to be able to keep running after a bad situation. instead of coming home.
another person who is more risk adverse would just have cash, debit card and keys sent to them. however you are still going to need a picture id for hotel, car rental.
greg there is a package theft possibility and your identy stolen but it is remote. your identy is stolen much easier in other ways.

I agree and see the point, but you can't have a duplicate license that is valid nor use a copy to get any services like hotels. There is a way around that, it is simple but time consuming to do in some cases (in your case with the box it can be done before the box arrives) - have the assistance of the police department to provide proof who you are. Many are fingerprinted for Hazmat and that is in the system, so they may pull up that record and than assist you. I have had that done.

The point is that there is a risk involved in packages and when you are under a bad situation and need to get moving again, then any problems with that package getting to you, or being lost may be a worse situation than what you are in, in the first place.

FedEx, UPS and DHL are not perfect, in fact they do lose a lot of stuff.

Not bashing you, not for a second just want others to know the risk and why.

your write about the cdl. that is why ill put the passport card in it(i have both card, and book). and your write mail service may loose the package. but hopefully you wont have 2 bad days enaroll. . so far in last three years neither trippak or us mail that i have sent has been lost. nor anything i have ordered.
you still could be right but for me its worth the risk. we are talking about and emergency situation. we all will do things in an emergency that in other times no. will a passport get you a hotel room, a car rental? i dont know, it should though
