Veteran Expediter
Not offended by words

As much as I would like to agree with Terry’s premise, we must put professional in context of the actual profession. This by no means takes away from EO's purpose, contribution and standards as a website or a reflection of the people involved.
The one thing that you can’t forget is that we are professionals in a subgroup of another professional know for their rather isolated and anti-social behavior. The public’s view of the trucking industry is not favorable and as I have found out lumping everyone one who drives something bigger than a pickup into it.
What I mean is in the over all scheme of things, the public’s point of view and some what from my point of view; we are part of a profession that has dirty, filthy, foul mouth immature people involved with it and with the problems of dumping trash on the side of the road, pitching pee bottles out the window or using the parking lot as a toilet (hope that didn’t offend anyone?) and the complete lack of self-policing, the image that has been portrayed as a dirty, filthy, foul mouth immature profession continues today and rightfully so. Many are too far removed from ever being adults and are so obsessed with things like their ego and trucks that there is no chance of maturity (a.k.a. juvenile behavior) at all and it is usually these people that end up representing us on the road and at the forefront within the view of the public.
In comparison to other professions, especially ones I have been part of, there was always a small fraction of this behavior going on – many times it is self-policed to the point of castigation and exclusion in the profession for unprofessional behavior of some. Other times it was ignored and the people moved on to another profession, maybe trucking.
For most, expediting is a cut above the rest, which I tend to agree with most of the time but there have been times where I would meet up with someone who for a lack of better words is rather below the minimal standard of what I would consider a professional. There have been times when I was driving my van that I would have to move because of the stench or language (take your pick) emanating from the van next to me.
