About 10 years ago i drove for Roberts and swore i would never get into the business again. But I had a C trruck and was constantly getting van loads and would only get their pay rate. They also only ran me a couple times a week, so i was losing money every week until finally i decided to sell and get out. I would consider geting back in by owning a cargo van and if i could find a compnay that had dedicated runs or at least ran you on a regular basis. Can you guys give me any kind of advice or steer me in some direction. I really appreciate the help.

Some companies do have routes, but I can tell you of the companies who do the routes more often than not, will not hire someone off the street and put them on the routes. It is a dream come true for most drivers to do dedicated routes and the company will place within before going to the newbie hired drivers.

I have had a dedicated route since somewhere around last March. Mine happens to use I 75 and it runs at rush hour. Let me tell you That sucks. After that is over it is wonderful until I get to the originating and final dock. UAW! Good Lord!

The jobs are out there but not easy to find. I started looking the minute I got my first truck. At this point my run is going away and the open road appears to be where I have to get back to.

Good luck.

If you live in Michigan & are willing to go to Canada, Thompson has what ya might call a quasi-dedicated run. Pretty much every run you get will take you to the Toronto area. From there though, it's wide open on where you'll go in terms of getting back to the States.

Once you're in Toronto, they can send ya pretty much anywhere in the midwest. Then it's up to you if ya wanna sit for a day or so to try to get another run or decide to come home dead.

I left in large part because I pretty much wanted to be home most nights. I also didn't care for the US customs people upon returning to the US. If ya can deal w/ that, I'd say Thompson is a pretty good company to work for. They have a good dispatch team & all in all are pretty good people.

Good luck to ya,
Danny

I agree about the customs bull taht you have to put up with...its not worth it.Being in WNY i would get many trips into Canada and i always dreaded it because of the time it took to get thru customs and the attitudes of the aholes that work there. But thanks for the info.

Yeah, I agree the aggrevation of customs and the long lines and
gestapo tactics pretty much turned me off to taking any canadian runs.
If you are a smoker, you can't have more than one carton of smokes in
your truck or they consider you a smuggler.
High fuel prices, skimpy GPS data, cellphones either don't work there
or cost .65 a minute to use and the general lack of return runs makes
it a no brainer place to avoid.
