I can tell you first hand that carriers will always run the trucks at a $1.30 a mile plus FSC better than let's say a $1.65 plus FSC trucks. I know this to be a fact as we had reefer units at $1.65 plus FSC and they didn't run as well as our trucks at $1.30 per mile plus FSC. We lowered our over all rate and will only do reefer loads when offered at $1.65 per mile plus FSC and reefer FSC. They either pay the higher amount on the reefer loads or we just don't do them. I don't care if the load is 3000 miles, I won't turn on the reefer for less than $1.65 plus FSC. That is why carriers are buying reefer trailers. We aren't getting the reefer loads like we once did and a reefer straight truck unit is not worth buying any longer.
Ok...so the Fed went to 1.25 flat rate plus FSC . Not seeing a difference? Minimum on our trucks is 1.30. plus the FSC.

Last I heard when I looked into a straight the fed was paying 2.15 a mile with FSC. and 1.05 a mile for cargo vans. That was a couple years back.
Dave, are you saying you are running your reefers as dry units to keep them moving and only take a higher rate on temp loads ?
There's no way i could do loads at that rate.

Dave, if it works for you and you're happy that's all that matters.
This explains why Dave & Dave keep saying reefer work is dead. It must be at Panther.
To buy and maintain a reefer running at those rates, with an occasional bump up to $1.65 + fsc for a reefer load doesn't add up. Looks like the truck would seldom if ever be $2 all in.
No wonder there's downward pressure on our rates in certain areas. !
I have NEVER heard the words FEDEX DOES NOT LIKE FLEET OWNERS.
I have often heard they cater to fleet owners TOO much.
So your saying you would go broke at $1.20 a mile base rate with a .05 more for a team, .05 more for a lift gate truck, and .05 more for having haz mat. That's $1.35 plus FSC. We have made more money in six years at Panther than we did the 14 years we was at Roberts Express/FedEx Custom Critical. To be fair I will say we do have more trucks at Panther than we did at FedEx. FedEx Custom Critical is a great company don't get me wrong. They just don't like fleet owners and we could never grow our business with them. Unless that has changed since 2008. FedEx no longer fits our need as a fleet owner that can find it's own freight. DaveKc will tell you that when you can move your truck on your own verse an empty move or a planning relocation is better for everyone.
At Panther you are a true contractor and have full control of your truck. You also can book your own freight on your truck as long as they shipper is okay by Panther.
At 1.25 a mile plus FSC, even if I have to DH home from most loads I will make good money, but then again, I do all my maintenance and repairs myself.
So by doing all your maintenance and repairs yourself you either don't feel your time is worth anything or you are 'paying' yourself and putting the money you saved in the bank?
