It's been an April to remember (or perhaps forget) as far as severe weather is concerned. We've had six major severe weather events, some lasting multiple days.

TWC Severe Weather Expert, Dr. Greg Forbes (Find him on Facebook) now says April has set a tentative record, with 294 April tornadoes in the U.S., breaking the old mark of 267 tornadoes in 1974. Keep in mind, an average entire month of April sees "only" 163 tornadoes. We exceeded that average just in the first half of the month!

There have been over 5200 severe weather reports (tornadoes, hail, and high winds/wind damage) so far in April. On average, only about 3300 severe weather reports are tallied in an entire April nationwide.

What follows is a recap of each April severe weather event, with maps, notable tidbits, and links to articles, video, and/or photo collections. Let's start with a massive wind damage event:

I would say Global Warming here, but I'm sure Layoutshooter will say its all part of a pattern that happens every *** years

Yep, sure is part of a cycle. You should know better!! Besides we barely have 200 years of GOOD records. Maybe only 150 years out of how long? Spring is spring and this falls under the idea that "stuff happens".

If I remember correctly, and that gets harder each day, the winter season 73/74 was much like the one we just went through. COLD and a lot of snow. THEN we had that tornado outbreak in 74.

LOL!! YEPPER!! Mornin to you too! still workin on my first.

I DO remember ice fishing in JAN '74. Went up to Fletcher's Pond for pike. Tent camping. (not enough money for motel). We put down the straw, covered it with a tarp. Then we tried to put up the tent. The tent pegs would not go in. The ground was frozen too hard. Had to use screwdrivers for pegs. Then, it was soooo cold that our propane tanks froze each night. NO HEAT. That sucked.

There was 48" of ice. Took about an hour to spud a hole open and only about 20 minutes to limit out! GREAT TRIP!

Now here is food for thought. I heard that the Japan earthquake changed the axis of the earth ever so slightly. Ever since that time the weather has changed.

And that ocean currents are constantly shifting as well. That quake likely moved them a bit too.

To bring up ancient history, in the time of the Vikings Iceland's climate would allow farming. one of the reasons the Vikings tried to settle Iceland. The climate apparently changed after the settlements were formed and the glaciers returned for the majority of the next millennium. No more farming, climate change.

There a recent special on Iceland on NatGeo..farming is making a comeback...

Just a reminder that between 1915 and 1938, we saw some of the nastiest and deadliest weather ever. There were a couple of tornadoes which traveled on the ground for a few hundred miles, we had in 1928 some of the worst flooding we have ever seen as a country and temps ranging from very cold summers to very hot summers in a matter of years.
