Apple Maps

Okay, I've had the chance to use the new Apple Maps for a couple road trips. I actually prefer the look and feel compared to Google. I think it is easy to navigate and the 3D imaging is great. I know there has been some issues in some areas with directions - but those will be worked out so enough.

Spoken like a True Believer. :D

Believer? Actually, User. The same types who loath Apple culture/products from waaay back in the 90's are pretty much the same types today.

Apple has never been and never will be for the masses - unlike Skynet, I mean Google. LOL!

It should never have been released in its present form. In Ontario alone there are almost 400 cities completely missing.

Until they have a true google app for iOS products, Apple Maps has been serving well and is easier to use than googlemaps via browser. I haven't had any errant directions or missing towns yet.

The big problem with maps is that even if there is only 1% or less in database or routing mistakes, it can affect a great number of people. So far, I haven't been one of those affected.

Have to say, though, that I don't depend on it as my primary mapping device and use it only as a backup to my Garmin or for quick overviews of a complete route and timing if I'm away from my Garmin. It shines for that type of use, at least for me; sitting in a restaurant somewhere, or away from the van for whatever other reason and wanting to do some route planning.

It will also find poi's easier than the Garmin in many cases, as it pulls from more current web-based dbs, not whichever most recent poi update you've loaded to your Garmin or Tom Tom etc. Been many times I've found something thru the phone maps that did not come up in my most recent Garmin update.

Some of the newer Garmins will interface with your smartphone, and will thus find all those POIs that other Garmins won't.

iPhone users who had gotten used to Google Maps with directions certainly miss it, but even they really didn't know what they were missing by not having Google Navigator on an Android phone. Google Navigator is far more than just Google Maps with directions.

Yeah, maybe after the first of the year I will get a newer Garmin that can interact with smartphones. That'd be a wonderful combination.

There will always be ups and downs to the various aspects of a product and its apps, and competition between various producers of smart products (there are even smart guitars now that self tune and have on-board special effects etc and the market has been getting more competitive), and fanboys and girls of whatever product one has in their hand.

Hurrah for diversity!
