Ken is correct,
An over weigh ticket can easily run you 4 dollar a pound, depends on the jurisdiction.
if over on the bridge formula, you can see 6$/p.
AZ is notorious for that.
be aware .

this week i delivered into a WalMart DC.
that facility serve thousand of trucks every week.
only 2 way's to get in. from the north/south , or from the west.
i called ahead for directions, and followed the recorded instructions.
once i cleared the interstate, the instructions took me over 60 millage in states HWY's.
very good roads.
within the last 3 mil's, there where 2 bridges with restricted loads.over small creeks.
one was for 27 ton. the other for 18 ton.
me thinking most delivery trucks are over heavy serving that DC.
i checked the road atlas. no mentions. it IS a truck route.
you just can't win.

$30,000.00 for a over weight ticket is a crime if you ask me. This is highway robbery, this just makes me never want to go into PA again.

When my husband was running local years ago when we lived in Pa. he was busted with an overweight ticket (the bridge was posted but ironically the sign was behind an over-grown tree). The fine was for $13,000. They write the fine in that amount to be sure you show up for court. My husband went to court and the whole thing was over in 5 minutes with us writing a check for $500.00. It's all about the revenue.

This will probably be closer to the real outcome of this ticket. I had a friend who had an overweight fine in Missouri, situation similiar to what Moose described. I think his fine was something like $6k or $8k and the judge reduced to $300 or so.

The driver bears some responsibility....
You are right because there are road signs and the trucker atlas also has some restricted roads.
I drive a 13'2" billboard truck and I use the trucker atlas to help detremin if I can go dowm a road. usally weight restricted
and gps likes to try and take me on parkways in new york. LOL
