The DHL contract with the Teamsters union calls for over $8 an hour in wage increases over 5 years . DHL U.S. operations lost over $900 million last year DHL Express Workers Overwhelmingly Ratify National Contract . Most DHL clients use the service strictly because of lower rates . Amazon.com alone has thousands of customers posting messages in forums asking them to drop DHL . German Corporations despise American labor unions . Daimler unloaded Chrysler and moved Freightliner truck production to Mexico .

Sure why not sign a contract?...smart management move. Keep things moving while re-organizing and if it doesn't work out..file chapter 11...and boot everyone out...can't get blood from a stone. The contract means nothing. If I were a worker I still wouldn't be celebrating yet.

Wasn't some large company looking at DHL? I heard a small bit on the radio last week about a possible sale but never caught the name.

Yes Crazy, the Germans do hate our unions. The strength of the German unions in comparison to ours, very strong. They work with the companies, like the Japanese unions do, they don't cry about things like ours does.

Well, I have two comments. I hate the way DHL delivers where we live. They will hold a package for as long as a week since we live "out in the country" and we can not get a package delivered by them in a timely manner. UPS AND FedEx manage to deliver packages daily to our area. I am one of the ones who complained to Amazon about using a company like DHL who doesn't deliver to all areas of the country.

The other thing is about our Trip Paks. I don't know if other companies use Trip Paks for your BOLs but I think it is very strange for a large company to use a company like DHL to deliver our Trip Paks. What's up with that? It just doesn't make sense to me that an expediting company would use another delivery company to deliver their paperwork. Does anyone else find this strange?

Tripak has a deal with DHL to pick up the contents of the box on a daily basis. FedEx is one of several companies that use tripak. I think CC is the only division that uses them, maybe some of the supply chain owners do to.

The thing that got me was ordering supplies, they always paid top dollar to USPS to get them here. My supplies now come via UPS.

You mean Fedex CC uses DHL for trippak? They can't get a better deal internally?

Kinda off the subject but I shipped a Jeep top and doors thru FedEx Kinkos(now FedEx office) Guy who bought the doors wanted them delivered to a FedEx Kinkos near his work. I checked tracking and it stated package was undeliverable. Come to find out FedEx Ground can't deliver to Fedex Kinkos. Another piece I sent out UPS since it was too large for FedEx. The UPS package arrived at FedEx Kinkos with no problem.
I was cracking up over the stupidity of the situation.

My cousin's husband drives for DHL and voted against that contract. He is sure that MANY jobs will be lost. He is expecting losses of up to 30% at his terminal (Romulus, MI) alone. He said that layoffs will start right after the first of the year, as soon as the holiday rush is over. They are telling him that they will start using temp drivers for the busy seasons and only keep a smaller full time driving force. Way to go Teamsters!!! Looking out for the American workers to the bitter end. Layoutshooter

Just announced this morning....its official

Deutsche Post to cut 9,500 jobs in US
By GEORGE FREY

posted: 8 MINUTES AGO

FRANKFURT, Germany -Deutsche Post AG will close all of its DHL Express service centers, cut 9,500 jobs in the United States and eliminate U.S.-only domestic express shipping by land and air, the company said Monday, citing heavy losses and fierce competition.
The Bonn-based company said the new round of cuts are on top of another 5,400 job cuts it already announced and blamed heavy losses at the unit, which competes with rivals UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp.
Deutsche Post investors cheered the decision, sending the company's shares up 7 percent to 10 euros ($12.90) in Frankfurt trading.
The cuts are part of a wider plan to curtail operations in the U.S., including domestic ground and delivery services though its international shipping to and from the U.S. would continue. The Express unit currently employs some 18,000 workers.
However, Deutsche Post said the U.S. remained a key market and that its other operations there, including freight and global mail and other logistics, won't be affected by the closings.
Deutsche Post's U.S. logistics unit employs more than 25,000 workers in the U.S.
Part of the plan calls for the halt to domestic shipping by Jan. 30, the company said after it closes all of its ground hubs and reduces the number of service centers from 412 to 103 across the U.S.
At a press conference, company officials, including chief financial officer John Allan said the job cuts and location closures would be "clear across the country," without being more specific.
"The retained U.S. international Express network with a total of 3,000 to 4,000 employees will be tailored to the needs of the group's international Express service customers," the company said in a statement. "All international shipments into the U.S. will still be delivered, while 99 percent of the outbound shipments will be picked up."

Now are trip paks considered part of the global mail system???

Trip Pak will now be forced to look for a new pick-up service. I don't know who handled the business before DHL. I don't think that they are one in the same company. Correct me if I am wrong. I thought Trip Pak was Trip Pak and DHL did thier pick ups. Layoutshooter

Not sure what would happen if FedEx took it over. I doubt if they would use exsisting drivers. I would see new opertunities for people with small vans to start new businesses. They would buy or contract for a Trip-Pak route in thier area. Just thinking out loud. Layoutshooter
