This week while traveling around Nebraska I stumbled upon Carhenge. Carhenge is a huge autolithic structure located outside of Alliance, Nebraska; on state Hwy. 87. Being that I had just completed a delivery in Nowhere, Nebraska; I figured I had at least 20 minutes to kill before the next load offer. So I pulled into Carhenge on a whim and four tires.

I was so overwhelmed by the size, magnificence, and mystery of Carhenge that I spent the entire day there. I also refused 7 load offers. Carhenge was believed to be built between 3,000 and 1,000 B.C. Nobody knows for sure who built Carhenge. Some believe it was the work of wacky Druids. Others claim it was made by ancient Motorheads as a place of worship.

It wasn't until the 1950's that scientists and auto mechanics discovered the astronomical significance of Carhenge. The precise geometric placement and even the specific model of car; the Pontiac Solstice proved that Carhenge was used as an accurate celestial calender.

Another equally important function of Carhenge was its use as an astronomical observatory. The specific placement of certain makes and models of cars such as the Mercury Comet, Plymouth Satellite, GM Astro van, Olds Rocket 88 and the Yugo Uranus all bear this out.

Located 2 miles north of Carhenge on Hwy 87 is this country's first totally "green", eco-friendly, self-sustaining, modern rest area designed and built by Al Fresco. This facility uses no electricity and is heated and cooled by solar and wind power. It won the Al Gore Carbonless Footprint award in 2007. Another notable winner of this award was the National Cash Register Company (NCR) in 1963 for the development of NCR Paper; a non-carbon copy paper. "Carbon free is the way to be".

We don't know who they were.....or what they were doing....but their legacy remains!

Carhenge! Where the demons dwell,
Where the banshees live and they do live well.
Carhenge! Where a man's a man,
And the children dance to the Pipes of Pan.

You find the coolest places! :)
I have become the "go to guy" for cool places. I think I'll leave the mundane stuff for somebody else.

What brought me to Carhenge was a delivery to the Box Butt General Hospital (oops I forgot an "e") in Alliance. The freight was a life saving filter assembly for their kidney dialysis machine. The first person scheduled for dialysis that day was the head cook, Pam Tocin, a.k.a The Renal Retentive Chef. How's that for a cut above the mundane.

If you think Carhenge is cool, you have got to check out the Grout Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Grout of every kind from around the world is on display here. In the Hitch**** room you will find the original Bates Motel bathroom set from the movie Psycho, complete with blood splatters.

There is also ancient grout from China used to fill gaps in stone and timber construction. This grout was known as Peking Chinking. It was made of moss, tea leaves, orange rind and assorted spices. Not only did it keep the cold winds out, it was a room deodorizer and a handful made a kettle of tea.
