An expediters prayer

I wrote this last summer during an extended layover without any wifi. It is only partially autobiographical, a little poetic license it is more through the eyes of someone trapped in the trucking industry. Although there are days I feel like this, for the most part, I like this line of work.

My Life for a living

I never went to college
Never got a degree
Never got fat
Working for the big 3

I found a loving woman
We bought us a little shack
She plants flowers in the front
and the kids play in the back

You know it takes alot of money
to live this American Dream
I've cooked I've cleaned I've sold my soul
The paychecks just made me scream

I never found anything
that would pay the bills at home
till I bought this old Kenworth
and I hit the open road

Each day is an eternity
But the years have sure flown by
My face is usually smiling
but my heart knows its a lie

Now my daughter, shes in college
and my sons off on his own
But they don't really know me
cause I'm always far from home

So I fire up my rig
My heart it sinks so low
they say the road is freedom
but I'm so all alone

I've been alot of places
they all sure seem the same
this is no life I'm living
It's really quite insane

Yeah I love my wife and family
it hurts so much to go
But tuition's due on Friday
and there's so much more I owe

When I die, put on my tombstone
please don't shed a tear
He took his own life years ago
when he put that truck in gear

Here's a more light hearted one. I actually wrote this as a song, but with no musical ability it is a poem. If anyone with a guitar and a webcam wants to perform it feel free. If it makes millions 50/50 split ok lolo

I spent half the day in a shipping dock
I spent last night in a bar
17 states in the last 3 days
these roads they go so far

The ICC and the DOT
They just get under my skin
Scale tickets, Fuel receipts and my coloring book
they tell em just where I've been

Overweight, out of hours and late for a drop
I barrelled outta Tulsa Town
I blew right by a full grown bear
He flew out to run me down

I rolled for a minute I let him get close
He came up right on my a ss
I hit the shoulder and I locked up my brakes
then I heard that awful crash

Mad as hell with a bruise on his head
He staggered up to Ol' Pete
I yelled out the window call EMS
or send me on down the street

Listen here son you're as good as done
I've got you clocked at 92
your tires look bald, hope your papers aren't flawed
and my trucks a real mess too

You shoulda kept a safe stopping distance
tween me and your SUV
but I got all my papers for you
please call that medic for me

He thought for a moment, I looked in his eyes
I think I saw a little tear
He snarled and he grumbled then he stormed off
and shouted get the "F" outta here

I wonder how different things would be
if he knew what creek I was up
But I just grinned and I laughed as I rolled away
From that steaming enforcement truck

The moral of this story is you might beat them once
as I left there with no worry
But now i got a handfull of tickets to pay
Shutdown at the Coup in Missouri

Here I sit in Philadelphia
wondering how I can get healthia
I have gained so much weight
and there is no frieght
so I say go to hell with ya

I have but a 20 to my name
I have noone else to blame
the sun has come from behind the cloud
I want to scream out loud
unless the freight changes I will go insane

I am the only one here
noone to share my fear
I listen to the news
all that is is more blues
so I read the posts on here

I sit and I pray
there will come a day
I get to go home
but then she's on the phone
telling me she don't want me and to just stay away

sometimes I get carried away
while sitting at the flying j
I'm not one to sit ponder
yet the mind tends to wonder
how in the world did I get this way

I am not much of a poet
and now everyone knows it
I tried it school
and felt like a fool
so I'm going now before I really do show it

With all the writing
I am so impressed
to tickle the fancy
words from the best

What a great bunch
of people you are
You all keep me
raising the bar

Your words do tickle
your feelings sincere
my dear friends
I'll raise you a beer!

I'll see your beer
and raise you a shot.
Right now time
is all I've got.

We can raise a glass
to more prosperous times,
When the freight moves again
the settlements will be sublime.
