The alternatives are US 20 all the way across, which will take you about a week, or you can go down 219 to the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86) and take that through Elmira, Binghamton and then up I-88 to Albany. That route is about 375 miles and takes 6 or 7 hours. Straight across I-90 is about 300 miles and takes about 5 hours.

Do not take 20 across , it will take you forever & will cost you more in fuel then the demm toll .

This is a conspiracy , they can charge at will , we don't have mach choices .
hope you can pass along the costs of moving the freight .

As a NYS native, I am ashamed to admit that tolls were supposed to stop being ccollected in 1997 after an extended bond payment period. That being said, I travelled a ton over it during the last month. I hate the thruway.

If you're coming into the state from Canada, take the 37 exit on the QEW to Queenston/Lewiston (Rt. 405). That will dump you onto 190, which has a quick exit to NYS 31. Routes 31 and 104 are almost parallel to the lakeshore, but end before Albany. I personally like to take 31 as far as I can, say to the Clyde-Savannah area, then drop down to 20, as turtle suggested. Be careful when you drop from the north to 20, however: NYS has a ton of poorly-marked, very low bridges.

It will take you longer, but Governor Dewey would be pleased.

Turtle's right........I86 is your best bet for an alternative route. It's 65MPH most of the way, which helps and they have improved quite a few stretches of the route. The toll prices are getting absolutely ridiculous here in NY. We,too, try to avoid the toll roads here whenever possible.

if you run 86 then up 88 the extra miles will cost you more than the tolls.what i do,i dont take loads that have to use the ny thru way, unless the cost of tolls are added to the load
