The system was new in 2005. I have been told by 4 Carrier dealers that it would cost a lot of money to covert to R134.
The insulation is a REAL problem and needs looked at. The only problem is time to do it.
The cheapest I have be told on getting hose done was $400 and that price was ONLY if it was done in conjunction with a TCU PM. I guess I could do it my self, if I knew how. It should not be that hard. I have been told that the "rubber" hoses are part of the problem, that newer, less porous, teflon hoses are what is needed. The hoses are about 14 feet long.
Sorry Layout, but if it does not have R134 in it, it is crap. Carrier knows better and they bought into a junk system. They should not hesitate to offer a conversion - reasonably priced conversion. I think the worst of it is lubrication but replacing the compressor can simply solve that.
Insulation, especially floor insulation is important and if the truck is more than 4 years old, it is time to replace the crap they put in. I been experimenting with insulation combos for three years now and finally found the right combo that works for me. I put down a floor in the sleeper, not depending on carpet and it works out great. THE ONLY problem I have and I know everyone has is the heat soak from the cab, it is bad in trucks.
Hoses are easy to replace, there is no special fittings that can't be found and a lot of companies can crimp the ends. The hose is cheap, I think I got 20 feet for something like $40.
There is nothing on these units that should be on the level of rocket science. The biggest issue is the control unit, then the condensers. Some have serious pulley alignment issues but all of them are easy to fix and work on.
