One other thing is my truck can't be over 7 years old. So to go out and buy an expensive truck with a sleeper is something I can't justify. I realize other companies don't have these age limits as I have seen some pretty old trucks running down the road.

Actually I believe Roberts Express had a rule in the late 90's "in by 7 am out by 7 pm", perhaps this is where the 12 hour rule came from? Of course they paid deadhead for a move to the next Express Center, which was always less than a 100 miles since they had a mega number of those.
Con-Way used to use miles to pickup and we were able to sort it out that way. Of course unpaid deadhead is always a business variable. When arriving in St Louis if we were #3 Van we'd just go on to Chicago at our expense. Also when out for a weekend and your a van team sometimes it's better to go home than sitting for a weekend;however, these expenses need to be tracked to ascertain whether you're actually a money making business vice a hobby/vacation.

Thanks to each of you for your views regarding deadhead. Your points of view contain a blend of obvious experience as to dealing with the inclusion of deadhead miles within load offers.

We to include DH when bidding a load along with a one percent post load addition. We particularly like the useful phrase - all miles commented by Team Caffee. All miles (AM) would be an excellent DH replacement. DH for driving home, driving in for truck maintenance, driving to the doctor, etcetera.
Thanks, Capt Carl

Do most Owner Ops here know what their daily fixed expenses are? I've figured mine out for 365 days and also 260 days based on working only M thru F Just wondering if everyone goes over all the figures like I do or do you just run hoping to make a profit?

Its a simple formula Moot,

[(DH x aggrevation) / (CPM / Price of BigMac)] x [(ROE x GDP - XYZ) / (Post Count - Intelligent Post Count)]

Take all that and multiply by .62 and Voila! Just remember to carry the 3 in the first line.

How many telephone poles an hour does that equate to?

No smartbutt...gee whiz....you know better....don't you own your own trucking business?
Do you? Who has their name on the side of your sprinter, you or E1? Who does the shipper call when a load needs moved, you or E1? Who tells the shipper how much it is gonna cost to have the load moved, you or E1?

I hope CEVA never tries to make a real go at increasing there expedite truck count. It would take business away from me as I am a partner carrier with them. I like the way they run there network and they have dock's close to all major airports, which is great!!.

And sense this topic is really about DH then I guess I will throw my .02 cent's in. I add the DH + loaded + reposition miles into the bid. At the end of the month I look at odo miles and gross pay and if I keep that at .65 cents or more per mile turned then I know I am doing things right. And let me tell ya its hard with how cheap some of this freight is going for. But I manage to come out ahead 10 out of the 12 months in a year so I guess I must be doing something right!!:D

I as in me decide which loads to take for MY business model NOT E-1....They are the representitive I've, as in me, have chosen to procure loads on my behalf of which I ,as in me again, pay them an agreed upon portion of said load....
