When you drive for an owner and have no investment in an asset, you aren't building a business. You may be learning a business, but all you are is an underpaid flunky, being taken advantage of , most times, by some greedy owner.
Is not the underpaid flunky also taking advantage of the fleet owner by getting paid to learn a business using an owner's equipment and tapping into the owner's knowledge? Sure there are bad owners as well as bad drivers. For the most part it can be a paid apprenticeship where both parties can be profitable. Once a driver proves him/herself and chooses to remain a driver for a fleet owner rather than go the O/O route, a smart fleet owner would up the compensation to retain that driver.

The newbie would be ahead if he got a prevailing wage from day one. A good guarantee that he really didn't cover.
I once had an owner told me he had a team whose purpose to go into a truck was more to have a place to live than to work.
Other than Unicorn Cartidge, have you seen many owners up a driver's pay once they learned to be profitable ?

When an owner hires a stone cold rookie he ought to understand what he's getting.
How often does the rookie fully understand what he's getting into ?

heres a thought to some fleet owners....In the Taxi business fleet owners would "lease" you the car per shift = 12hrs or by the week.....
$35.00 S-T and $100.00 on F-S and YOU pay the fuel...whether you work or not is up to you and fleet owner has thier expenses paid...Maybe fleet owners could set a number say $500.00/$750 per week and drivers pays fuel.

This sounds like a good Teanna project as they seem to have lots of spare time on thier hands

Lol, they don't have a clue. Being new their is a level of excitement because it's new, eyes wide shut and ears closed. They believe everything they hear and believe everything they see. That's just 1 issue. The most intelligent, hard working, caring men and women will get chewed up and spit out if they fall into the wrong hands

They need to be slapped up side the head and sat down, respectfully of course. Lol. And I'm purely joking. But their was a time or 2 I should of slapped my self upside the head also. Haha

the last thing fleet owners want is to be determined drivers are "employees"..that would be a big NoNo...

I had 1 great driver made me money and worked the sheet....60/40.....I said Ernie why not work per shift or per week....He said that made him lazy and this way he had to hustle....heck even om a Monday his envelope was never less then 75 bucks and thats after scooping 1 fare for coffee money....LOL

The burger flipper will usually get paid. Regardless of number of burgers flipped. No zero paydays.

You should have gone to the John Clark School of Successful Taxi Driving instead of going to see the movie TAXI DRIVER

Come to think about it I had a lot of interesting jobs and they where all driving jobs. I drove local flatbed, OTR oversize, I drove limousines, a cab, I was a personal driver for some local politicians for awhile some of those years are foggy but it's possible I might have even drove Mrs Daisy.

rookies see the short term.....like wow in 24 hrs or less I can drive 1500 miles and make 1,000 bucks! to someone starving and about to lose the roof over their head that is BIG bucks....That is what we are up against....and thereis no shortage of carriers that don't take advantage of this either...hence the revolving door...

I understand why fleet owners do not want employees.

That does not change the fact that I believe most drivers in this industry ARE employees.
As long as you can get away with it, have at it.
My opinion doesn't matter.

and then this industry is fairly split....People that need the income as this is their primary income and then those that are retired and use this as a paid vacation tour....the latter usually has a lower CPM then the former and can afford to take a steady diet of .65 loads, The full timer with a high CPM will drowned with that price....

This is a point of conflict at most truck stops...
