I was 12 and we had just made it home from picking up groceries. My mom owned the sears catalog store and closed it early to prepare for the storm. Went to bed with about 6"on the ground and awoke to the sound of silence. We lived close to the main road in the little town I grew up in and it was always moderately busy. My school as just across the main highway also. No traffic no nothing. We had 18" on the ground and 18" in the air. By the time it was all done we ended up with 26" nothing moved or was dug out for the first 2 days. The third day the winds settled and they started. Took another 2 to get most of town open and a few more for rural roads. I remember going for a drive around town and evey thing was like a tunnel to get into. Snow piles 20' tall around parking lots, doorways, roadsides and sidewalks. As a kid it was awesome. We had no school for a week. It was a time to remember.

I was a college student in Minneapolis, no recollection of the weather or news of the day.

I probably used my typewriter that day. Personal computers had not yet come on the scene. My bright-red Pontiac Firebird sat in the lot. It had an eight-track tape player. Telephones were mounted on or plugged into the wall. The Sony Walkman had not yet been introduced. Jimmy Carter had been sworn into office a couple weeks before, replacing Gerald Ford. "Book 'em, Danno!"

I've lived most of my life in SE PA; most times, even if there's a blizzard, the snow disappears after a week or so. What I remember about 1977, besides it being senior year :D , was that there was snow on the ground continuously from before Christmas to Valentines' Day. This is not usual for Philly at all!
