I am looking to get back into the expediting business. Back in 02 i drove for a small company for 4 years or so and liked it ok. I am thinking about buying a 2011 G3500 15 foot Penske van. My Brother is a broker and he said he could keep the truck working.plus i could sign on with a local company that he does some work for. What do you all think? Any input is greatly appreciated. Other than the truck what cash do i need to get moving? and what is the going rate (per mile)for a truck like this? Mygoal is to be home MOST nights. Thanks!!

If you want to be most nights then go work for Ceva. They do local deliveries and sometimes otr but you will be home most nights.

Vehicles that have a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more are Commercial Motor Vehicles, which means you will need a DOT Medical Card and you will have to log and scale and comply with all the other FMCSA Rules and Regulations just like a big truck. Because it's not over 26,000 pounds you won't need a CDL, but other than that it's a Big Truck in every way that matters.

You need to go back and re-read Turtle's post.

Cdl is not required on vehicles with 26000 lbs or less gvwr. Yours is 12k, so your cdl will not help you.
The problem with your 12k gvwr van is that it is over 10k. As a result you will have to log, scale, and be bound by the hours of service rules (10 hours break after 11 hours of driving). These breaks need to be taken in a DOT approved sleeper, or, if you don't have one, you need to show a motel receipt for every break you take. You can't just lay down and sleep across your front seats and log it that you are in the sleeper berth.
