I broke off the red tab and then pushed out the remaining red plastic bit (catch it to use again) with a small screwdriver. After that, just pull off the black plastic cap with the internal O-ring. When you replace the black plastic cap, make sure the cap is clean and the O-ring is in place and reinsert the red bit to lock the cap in place. I've also heard that you can just pull hard on the black plastic cap (w/o removing red bit), but I haven't tried that.

Just noticed that you seem to think there is a tranny dipstick connected to the cap - there isn't, you have to buy or make one. I tried to make one and it's not that easy (speedometer-like cable works best). You also have to measure tranny temp when checking level and you also need to know what the level target is (mm full) as a function of temp. The yahoo forum sprintervan has DIY files that show how to do that. I finally ended up buying a dipstick from europarts-sd.

Yeah ..... what he said ......

To remove the cap just grab hold of it firmly and give it a good pull as jon says - no need to remove the red tab.

To put it back on, put the round cylindrical portion of the cap back into to the dipstick tube and give it a good shove until it bottoms out.

If you don't see the o-ring that jon mentioned look down inside the dipstick tube - mine gets left in there (right at the top) every time I pull the cap - make sure you remove it from the dipstick tube and place it back over the round cylindrical portion on the bottom/underside of the cap and push the o-ring up as far as it will go. Then shove the cap back down into/over the dipstick tube.

The dipstick itself is a special service tool - the Merecedes/Freightliner part number is 140 589 15 21 00.

It can be ordered from your dealer or Europarts of San Diego (http://europarts-sd.com/) for around $50. Check their website - there's a downloadable price list of discounted Sprinter service parts you can order from them (Hint: The special fluid that the NAG1 Sprinter transmission takes is likely much cheaper from them than from your dealer)

FWIW, the fluid seems to be pretty specialized - only two vehicles use that particular fluid - the Sprinter and the Chyrsler Crossfire.

I don't particularly like paying the high price for it (I think over $20 per quart at the local dealer, about 1/2 that at Europarts) but given the cost of a replacement transmission, I'll pony up and not just stick any old fluid in it.

Think I'll buy my own fluid and let the dealer do it..I like that they check and adjust the tranny for any possible wear and problems.

I hear that the mercedes crap is even more picky on trans fluid then other chrysler transmissions so its highly suggested that you use the correct fluid and dont go with one of the "yeah this works too" fluids. Unless you know a good transmission repair guy.
