First of all i would like to say hello as a new member. I found this site and it looks like its a great rescource for some info on kodiak 2004 c4500 cutaway van with an allison trans. I am a landscaper who had my ford f450 stolen and am in the hunt for a good dependable work truck. I will usually be hauling a tandem axle trailer with a small kubota tractor, combined weight of about 6ooolbs. Most of my jobs are within a 25 mile radius. I know absolutley nothing about the kodiak so my questions are: Is this a dependable truck if its well maintained? And what kind of licensing and or permit issues do i face compared to a vehicle with a gvwr less than 10000 lbs. This truck was well maintained and has only88,000 miles and the price is within my budget, but is it too much truck for my landscaping needs? And lastly since this is a larger than average truck would the maintenance be something that most mechanics be able to handle? Obviously this is all new to me and i know that i'm requesting alot of info but any help will greatly appreciated!! Thank you all !! Greg

For what sounds like a few hundred pounds load in the van plus about 3 tons in tow a 4500 seems like overkill but if the numbers are right then who's to argue with the numbers.

The truck itself shouldn't be an issue and the links Jack provided on it are good places to look for info...as for licences and permits, again, Jacks advise on the DMV is the right one..contact them...that said, and yes contact them, but since your job is NOT primarily as a truck driver, you shouldn't need anything special...

Well first off Kodiak is not a van, it is a truck. They made a cutaway for RV and professional services but I am thinking this is a box truck ... maybe?

The 4500 most likely has a 6.6 duramax in it which is pretty much the same as the pickup - with the same allison tranny in it. They did have an Izuzu (large duramax) option for the 4500s but I don't see the number they produced.

Comparing it to the f450, it is about the same thing - generally speaking. If it is the 16k+ GVW chassis, then it may be a bit too "big" for landscaping unless you are hauling heavy stuff around - meaning the gearing is setup to haul heavy loads. BUT if the price is right, go for it.

As for maintenance, shouldn't be an issue unless you are looking for factory/dealer servicing - GM does not deal with medium duty trucks any more but some dealers will still service them. There are a number of unique parts but being a 2004, after-market parts shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the advice and info. Yes the truck is a covered utility bed which is what i'm really looking for, i believe this truck will work fine considering all of the stuff i have to carry, but knowing absolutely nothing about these i thought it best to ask those who do. If anybody else out there can give me any other details stories or points of view it would be a great help as i may purchase this truck on tues of this coming week. Thanks again! Greg
