I admire your willingness to take the plunge and drive into Manhattan for the first time. A lot of good freight comes out of NYC. By choosing to be one of those who will go in after it, you avail yourself to more opportunities than those who don't.

Aprehension about the unknown is understandable. It will pass as your knowledge of the city grows. You can accelerate the learning curve by purchasing paper maps of the city, detailed enough to show one-way streets, and studying them. It became much easier to get in and out when we bought computer mapping software.

Thousands of people successfully drive trucks of all sizes in and out of the city every day.

This may not apply to your specific pickup, but not seeing it mentioned here let me share one of our favorites routes into and out of Manhatten. It is not always the shortest but we find it quite easy.

If you are coming in via northbound I-95, and crossing the George Washington bridge, continue to I-87, the Major Degan Expressway. Go South on I-87 to the 3rd Avenue bridge exit. Take the bridge across to Manhattan. Pick up Lexington Ave from there. Lexington is a one-way street that runs as far down as 23rd Street if you need it.

On the map, you will see Madison Ave just two blocks west of Lexington. Madison Ave is one way running north, all the way to the Madison Ave. Bridge, which puts you back on I-87.

Again, using these routes may not be the shortest or even the best. Everyone has the routes they like. Having discovered the Madison Ave bridge, I'm in love with Madison Ave. Once we're on that one-way street, we're as good as out of the city.

The others are correct. Stay off the parkways with a truck. Commercial trucks are not permitted there.

For your pickup, using the above bridges, take I-87 to the 3rd Ave Bridge and pick up Lexington Ave. Follow Lexington to 47th St, which is one-way to the right. Turn right onto 47th St. and follow it to Broadway and your pickup. Note that 48th st and 46th street are one-way coming back the other way. Also note that shortly after you turn right on 47th, you will cross Madison Ave. On your way back out, take either 48th st or 46th st to Madison Ave. Turn Left on Madison Ave and follow it all the way to the Madison Ave. Bridge. You pick up I-87 North just across the bridge. It is a left turn onto the ramp.

Note: Last time we did this, a few months ago, there was construction just off the 3rd Ave bridge. Keep alert and follow the signs through the construction (provided no one has stolen them or covered them with graffitti). It would be wise to do a close map study of the area just beyond the 3rd ave bridge to get you onto Lexington.

Thanks to all for the assistance!!!
I try to never let a BIG CITY get in my way of trying to make a living. However, this being my 1st time in NY we wanted to have all of our "i's dotted and T's crossed".
At this time we do have our "plan of attack" mapped out and we are following this up with the NYPD office at 3:30pm today.
We were very pleased when we called, (we called the number in the truckstop book) for the NY DOT located in Albany, we actually got to talk to a "real person", who then, in turn, gave us a name and phone number for a officer with the NYPD. Everyone so far has been more than helpful and extremely nice!
I will keep everyone updated to our final route and how the pickup went.
Thanks Again to all!!!!

Glad it worked out, those little bridges back to the Bronx can be quite usefull if u can get to them, B'way does not have any low bridges from what i could remember.

I drove in Manhattan for years acually started my driving career in in Manhattan....Ive done my time in hell, Try to back there as little as possile with the big truck, But with a city Truck 12"6 14 & 18 footer its not that bad.

im glad im in tractor trailer ,dont have to go anymore, but if I were to go to location you are talking about here is I feel the best way

I95 south, into new york,at exit 6a,you will take the Bruckner Exway (I278) west
at exit 47 you will take triboro bridge into manhatten, this is a toll bridge,
after crossing into Manhatten, stay west 'til 2nd ave,and go south.
south on 2nd ave to E57th st and go west to 7th ave, then turn south
7th ave turns into broadway at actors square, you will be there

now leaving manhatten,
this is the cheapest way out of Manhatten,as it is free
west on 47th street
north on 8th ave
west on 57th street
north on 12th ave
take ramp on to I95 for George Washington Bridge
Then stay on I 95 til you get to Miami

great run

5th time for me on the island yesterday, 2nd time solo. However, I made a few rules to go by in accepting loads there. JFK area of Queens is ok, as well as Long Island. Otherwise, I hafta have a co-driver (navigator). Use GW, Throgs Neck or Whitestone bridges. When in doubt, call NYPD. No pu/del times around rush hour. 8am del the other day, crept in at 4am, gave dispatch till 1pm to get me a load, then I left. Stick to your guns and you should have no problems, and don't let dispatch talk you into something you don't want or not sure about.

THawk
going save you some money
if going JFK early morning,go in outer bridge, thats the bridge on e 440,you get from I287,this will take you thru Staten Island, then you pick up the I278,if after 0500 you can go over the Gothels Bridge, thats the bridge going into NY from NJ on I 278
now wich ever bridge you are heading east on I 278,you then go over the Varrizano's Narrows Bridge, but east bound thats free,I278E to I 495E to I678S to JFK
when leaving JFK go over Whitestone bridge, and follow towards GWB
in tractor trailer this saves ove 30 bucks, dont know about straight truck. the Varrizano's bridge going west has a double fee on it.
When I deliver the bouroughs,or pick up,delivery I can pick my time, going in,but pick up is up to fed ex as it is after laying over.
I just tell them it's going be 3 1/2 hours til I get there,if you can live with it fine if not I don't go
as far as Bronx I go in GWB, Brooklyn or Queens,go in like i'm going to JFK
as far as the bridge heights, all new york state bridges are marked a foot low,13.6 will be marked 12.6,except the bridge in the narrows,it is marked 12.2,believe me you can get 13.8 under it

Thanx Creacher. We get $50 to go to the island, so I'll stay with the way I know. For a two axle, it's $13 for the GW and $9 for the Whitestone. I've been across Staten Island twice, and both times ended up in off the interstate in Brooklyn. Never again! LOL

Hi All,
The New York run was a tremendous success!! Thanks for all the input.
Here are the directions that we took:
I95 south
exit 6a Bruckner Exway (I278) west
exit 47 triboro bridge
2nd ave,and go south.
south on 2nd ave
E57th st go west
7th ave turn south
7th ave turns into broadway

On the way out we used Madison Ave. to Madison Ave. bridge, then followed signs to Geo Washington bridge and out we went.

The only problem we had was 57th was closed off. We thought OHHHHH NOOOOO. So went down to the next left hand turn and there was 7th ave. WHEWWW.

Went straight to our pickup.

We thank you all for the input!!!!

Stay safe,
Laura
