OK, the easy part, steers swap sides since they are different than drives but how often do you rotate them? How do you rotate the 8 drives and how often?

Different tires may have different requirements, but we have taken the front right drives and moved them to the back on the left side.
Then back left to the front right.
We scheduled this at roughly 100,000 miles. Check brakes, bearings, seals at this time and R&R the shocks.
Others may schedule this differently, but this seems to work for us.

OK, so you are basically making an X with the 8 tires, the front axle swapping with the back axle on the opposite side.

The other day I had my steers rotated and rebalanced, I told the tire shop that I wanted the tires to keep the same forward direction as they had prior to being rotated and that they needed to be broken down and remounted with the outside of the tires becoming the inside on the opposite side of the truck, the guy pretty much said yeah..yeah..yeah like he knew what the next thing I was going to say before I got it out of my mouth.

Well surprize...surprize...surprize! before I went into the shop to have the work order written up I marked the tires with a silver sharpie and it paid off because when I came back to get my truck I was able to tell that they only swaped sides and rebalanced them so they had to take them back off and redo everything.

I always double check the work before I leave and it pays off more often than not!

If you aren't doing it yourself you need a way to check up no matter what it is. Marking the tires is a good method. I've heard with the newer tires they don't have to maintain the same direction of travel anymore though. I'd be interested in any discussion of that aspect of tire rotation.
