I realize these types of runs are rare, but just wondering how often do ya get these kinds of little gems.

Last year I had the highest paying load ever. 12 loaded miles, 18 miles to pickup, paying $540 and some change. I was in a tractor though.

I get quite a lot of those. Unfortunately or fortunately this is normal for me. Nice loads pay wise but not enough of them to make a decent living. I've been hunting a bit longer runs lately as running around town is not easy and too many of these little jobs have too many problems (not ready, not per specs provided, no facility to unload at receivers end).

This actually brings up a good point. This is a Q to anyone who'd care to answer. Do these runs ever interfere w/ longer runs? While it's a sweet little run, in the end it's not a lot of $$$ total. If ya could get 2 or 3 per day obviously it would be a no brainer. Or if ya got it early in the day ya could be done quickly ya can have a chance at something else too.

If you're sitting at home & the little gem was more than likely going to be the only run that day.. like say ya get called for it at 7 AM but it's a 6PM pickup, would ya rather have a 10 miler for $140 or say a 600 mile run at your normal rate?

A hospital in St Louis had three barrels of hazmat material dropped off on their receiving docks.
The barrels were to go to the hospitals power station, 400 yards away, but across the street.
The power station didnt have a dock so our lift gate was needed. ( Thats why the LTL shipper dropped at
the hospital dock).
Loading 15 minutes, unloading 30 minutes.
However I refused to cross a public street with a haznat load without proper hazmat documents.
This took almost 3 hours to get.
pay: $842.00

Devils advocate. Do you get that 600 mile run offer every day? Guaranteed? Without fail? I've never seen a legitimate one sided coin so the flip side of that 600 mile run coin is the nothing at all side making the $140 look really good or it's the 300 mile run for $240 which after factoring in the higher expenses puts around the same amount into the bank.

This is why I am more interested in running local freight, I made a killing running those airport runs,From Cleveland to Ford engine plant, 4 miles one way, $150.00.

There are a lot of factors to consider there. If I'm at home, I'm probably going to do that and just come back home. Making some decent money and still ending up at the house at the end of the day is pretty good. If I'm away from home, I have a few rules I consider. Am I in a good area where I have a reasonable expectation of a long run? If so, I might skip the shorty. If the shorty is picking up at 4:00 am though, I might do it because I can knock it out before things get busy. If the shorty is picking up in the evening and it's still morning, I probably won't do it either. It's really like real estate. Location, location, location. If there are 50 other vans around where I'm sitting, I'll take whatever junk I can get, but if there's not much competition, I'm going to be picky.

It's funny how some of these little runs work out. Not recently, but not too long ago you would get one or two of these less than $250 runs & that would springboard me into a few decent to excellent weeks. Now most of the runs are offered out at $210
