I have a friend who has same engine and he has over 700 kmiles. But be careful when you buy an used diesel.

The 7.3 was a great van. I had the 3:55 rear and consistantly averaged 20.1 mpg's over the 6 years I owned it. I sure miss that mileage. I got rid of the van in November with 800,000 miles on it. I can give you a lot of tips on the 7.3. I thought I might catch up with you in Laredo yesterday but after I delivered at 10:00 AM, I got a load out of Los Indios to Oakville Ont. at 2:00 PM, maybe next time.

Are you in a cargo van? Was your load automotive parts? I'm just wondering because in three years of expediting with three different carriers, none of them were ever able to win me a bid load out of laredo.

I love my 7.3.It'll actually burn rubber pretty good!!! You are doing the right thing looking at ryder vehicles. It's the best way to buy a used vehicle.Who else would put a 30-day nationwide warranty on their vehicles?Go over it with a fine tooth comb when looking at it,take it to a mechanic, and if anything even looks funny on it, make a list, tell ryder, and they willmake it right. You wouldnt believe what I had done to mine. Call Nancy in Oak Creek, Wi Ryder(866-793-3794) and ask her to find out if there are any Manager's spaecials out there, that is where you can make out.Just inventory that has been sitting too long ofr them, so they chop the price nearly in half. Mine was originally stickered for 9,800 (still have the sticker) and I got it for 4,995 after they put it on manager's special. It blue-booked at the time of purchase for 11 and change. The only thing bad about getting a van with a 7.3 is they stopped putting them in vans in 2003. So that is the newest you can get with that engine. Some carriers want newer than this.Go to powerstrokehelp.com and watch his videos on the 6.0. I think after seeing those you may change your mind about a 6.0.Enough said.

This topic comes up from time to time and most of the people that bring it up have no idea that bith GM and Ford have 2 different GVW's in their 3/4 ton chassis...I can't speak to the Ford ratings, it has been too long since i dealt in that stuff day to day, but the GM GVW's WERE 8600 lb GVW for the light 3/4 ton and 9200 for the HD GVW...the 1 ton in a CV is rated at 9660...that 460 isn't the only difference either....as i mentioned in another thread, i am sitting in a Tranmission repair shop as i type this...I have 1 ton GMC...the Tech total me the the trans in my truck is bigger then the 3/4 ton HD and it is the same unit used in all GM HD trucks from 9600 GVW up 12,000 gvw then they go to the allisons....

When you buy even a HD 3/4, not everything is equal to a 1 ton.....brakes, full floating rear axles, bigger ft suspension etc...

And another thing to keep in mind, when loaded, the heavier 1 ton van, rides and drives better then a overloaded 3/4....as was said, don't send a boy to do a mans job...and so i don't come off as a sexist and since we also have female drivers, don't send a girl to do what you would ask a woman to do...:D

like i said the diff in the fords is the e350 comes with the 5.4 engine the e250 comes with a 4.6 otherwise it is the same parts. the 5.4 gets you the higher gvwr. so far only had two loads over 2K# in almost 20 months with the truck.

Blizzard,

Yes, I;m in a cargo van. The freight was automotive. The last 2 times I was in Laredo, I got right out. When I was there on Monday, there were 33 sprinters and vans between the TA and Flying J. I guess I just got lucky.

I thought about changing the differential to a lower ratio on the 2008 chassis, but GM told me that it would adversely affect the transmission shift points, because the ECM's could no longer be "Reflashed" after 2007 to accept the programming to make it work correctly. According to GM it would have damaged the tranny. I am glad I didn't simply change the gearing before I learned about the ECM requirement.

David,
All Trans ECMs can be 'reflashed'. The ratios are programmed into the ecm through the software and the shift points seems to be "learned" and then put into non-volatile memory. Many of the dealers can do the work and so can a lot of hackers.

The typical ECM used is basically the same for all the vehicles, the difference comes from the parameters set up when the thing is built or when the software is used to change things. Typically the different ECM p/ns have to do with things like SUV vs. Car, 2wd vs. 4wd things. The typical GM ecm can cover 2.23 to 8.73 ratios - which a few are used.

You don't want to change it to something beyond what the factory offers. it is not all about speed but volumetric efficiency.

Greg,

I am only stating what a Master Technician at GM told me after a drive train shop in Toledo had initially told me exactly the same thing when I had asked them about changing the gearing.

I can't speak to the ECM's on vans or trucks, but i know for a fact that you can "reflash" them and reprogram the ECMs in chevys HHR's, a friend of mine has done his more then a few times, each time he mods the motor, he has a company send him a lead and templet and their program so he can use his laptop to "reflash" it...without that being done. any mods he makes just don't work....oh the hhr is a 2009....

Yea I expect it would, with almost all the weight up front, you would barely have any traction empty :p

Front axle-3,900#
Rear axle-3,560#
Total empty weight-7,460#
This is full of fuel with my fat *** in it.

Hardly what you think.Real close ratio.
