The Trucker Who Cannot Not Truck

Glen does not have a computer on the road at the moment so he does not see the Open Forum or anything else online. He is a company driver with a non-expedite carrier. The carrier runs big-rigs only. To return to FedEx, he would have to buy a truck. Not knowing how this will work out, that...

    ARI Comes Through Again

Diane and I are laid over in winter weather, waiting to pick up on Monday. The temp dropped to +8 degrees overnight, which is not severe but cold enough to start worrying about the water freezing up in the sleeper water tanks, hot water heater, pipes, toilet, etc. This morning I did something...

    Chain Up Tool

Truth be told, I honestly cannot say. With five winters under our belts, Diane and I have yet to chain up. The closest we came was a trip over Donner Pass where chains were required. We had time to spare and parked and went to sleep instead. When we woke up, chains were no longer required.

    Chain Up Tool

The tool looks great. I also like the part where the driver is in his shirt sleves and working in the daylight under clear skies, in calm winds, on dry, level, paved ground. If the tool could assure me that I would only have to chain up in those conditions, it would be a bargain at twice the price.

The Trucker Who Cannot Not Truck

On Friday a friend and former expediter known to many in the Open Forum drove a tractor to get a tire fixed as he prepared to pick up a trailer and head out on the road. That would be a routine event with most drivers on most days. Not so with this driver on this day. He is Glen Rice, a dear...

    PC Miler 430 GPS

This thread got me to thinking about our Garmin Nuvi 750, and all the things it can do, and all I have left to learn about it. Like a lot of folks, I suppose, I learned just enough about our new GPS device to get it working and then let the manual sit. It takes some time but learning how to...

    I'm amazed!

And that, ladies and gentlemen is the history of expedited freight in a nutshell. FedEx Custom Critical -- previously Roberts Express -- develops a new market, starting with expedited freight itself. Competitors enter the new lucrative markets and price, service and quality competition begins...

let the attack on panther begin

Not everyone talks negatively about their former employer, carrier, customers, or other business entities or associations. Some people are very careful to keep things professional and positive. Look at the Open Forum. There are many active members that have changed carriers. What percentage of...

    PC Miler 430 GPS

The Garmin 750 has that feature.

    I'm amazed!

Habbit works for me. Name recognition works for me. It matters little why the customers call. I can only haul one load at a time. As long as I get that, I'm happy. :) At present, my one load at a time has come less often than before (we could increase our run count from current levels but don't...

    PC Miler 430 GPS

I'm afraid I can't tell you. As I said above, we use CoPilot Truck almost never. I have never compared Garmin routing with CoPilot or Delorme Street Atlas USA, which we also use. Having been doing this for five years, we have a pretty good idea where the truck stops are, and the scales, and...

    I'm amazed!

Absolutely! The shippers you mention have done their research and believe the same thing you do. They believe they would be better served by another carrier such as Panther II. Why do they then call FedEx Custom Critical to haul their freight? I don't know ... I guess they must have their speed...

    PC Miler 430 GPS

Well, ain't that a kick in the head? We bought a Garmin Nuvi 750 not long ago which was our first dash-mount GPS device. Becoming sold on it we just paid our Volvo dealer to route the power wire to a power supply inside the dash. That was to preserve the clean, uncluttered look we like to...

let the attack on panther begin

Or, for many expediters, the trick has been to find a company they actually like and are proud to associate with. In the Open Forum, when people rise to praise their carrier without reference to another carrier (as in cloaked bashing of one's former carrier), one or more people usually respond...

    Reconsidering Super Singles

I did not check Bridgestone. I have a brand loyalty to Michelin. I know that brand loyalty can result in paying a higher price for tires and I am certain that there are people out there with stories to tell about how other tires do just as well. That's OK. I like having Michelin tires on my...

    I'm amazed!

I have posted it many times. For clarity, let me post it again. There is not such thing as the best carrier. There is only the carrier that is best for you.

    I'm amazed!

You do like to make things personal and take things into the dramatic, don't you? "Have you been living in a cave?" is not an attack. It is a straightforward figure of speech. Get over it.

    I'm amazed!

Have you been living in a cave? I have been in this business over five years and not a month has gone by where I have not heard some trucker, including many here on EO, moan and groan about not making the money they used to. It is part of the background noise of thus business. You can verify...

    DHL and Trip Paks

A day or two ago I, a FedEx Custom Critical contractor, handed two Trip-Pak envelopes to the UPS man who was unloading the Trip-Pak box at a truck stop. There is some humorous irony in that.
