More value than just a truck…

True. In my comments I was thinking more about small carriers (1-10 trucks). Again we agree. I said that if a customer list (add relationship) is worth anything at all, it is worth only what someone else is willing to pay, which would be very little. Adding 20% to the price of a used truck...

It's Sad What Happened at FedEx CC

Nope. Linda stated that longevity recognition will take a different form in the future.

It's Sad What Happened at FedEx CC

I know the recognition plaques have been removed because contractors who have seen the wall with their own eyes tell me so. The fact that I have not personally viewed the wall does not change the fact that the plaques have been removed, does it? I also know I feel sad about the plaques being...

It's Sad What Happened at FedEx CC

You do not have it quite right. I have said many times that I expected to be treated like a number and that the advantage in that was fair play in dispatch because everyone else was treated like a number too. Whether someone had been there 10 years or ten days did not matter. All trucks were...

It's Sad What Happened at FedEx CC

Obviously, it is not up to me, but if it was, I would maintain the wall and would leave up forever the names of people who had given ten or more years of their lives to helping the company succeed. Even if they left for competitors, even if they were terminated, I would continue to recognize the...

It's Sad What Happened at FedEx CC

Regular readers know Diane and I left FedEx Custom Critical for Landstar a couple of months ago. The longer we are gone, the less often we think about our former carrier, and the less things matter that motivated us to leave. Those issues were resolved by leaving and as time passes the emotions...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

I see I misunderstood your post. The problem now sounds more like a CSA computer glitch. Carriers are getting real sensitive about CSA points these days. I would think that they would be all over that problem to get it corrected as soon as the negative and unfair effects were discoverd. If the...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

This is news to me, but before I run off and put "fire extinguisher inside" on our truck, I'd like to know the rule that requires it. I did a search of the California Vehicle Code but found no reference to or requirement for the signs. In the notes the officer put on your inspection form, was...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

Yes to all of the questions you ask above. But see the scenarios I posted above. I see no way that an officer can write a ligimiate citation to an off-duty driver for an equipment violation when it cannot be proven that the off duty driver had knowledge of it. Citations are issued for violations...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

Scenario: Team drivers coming off an extended break. On break, co-driver 1, strapped for cash sells good tires to another trucker for bad ones without co-driver 2 knowing. The person buying the good tires paid the tire shop to make the change so co-driver 1 has no receipt. Co-driver 2 knows...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

In which case, you could be charged with a violation. But that has nothing to do with the co-driver, does it? Setting a context may be helpful. Where and how would it happen that you would sign off on a post trip and then be later found by an officer to be falsly reporting the tire condition on...

Vehicle Maintenance Violations and Team driving

Same question for you that I asked Moose. Where is it written that an off-duty or in-sleeper driver would be cited for a worn tire violation? I can think of several scenarios where the on-duty driver would be presumed to know of the bad tire but the off-duty or in-sleeper driver would not.

More value than just a truck…

When a service business is sold, the seller does not determine the price, the buyer does. Customer relationships are loosely held in the transportation business. When presented with a customer list, you may not need to buy the business at all. The customers can be gained by offering the first...

More value than just a truck…

As a one-truck owner-operators, Diane and I do not believe we have a salable expedite trucking company. We have a salable truck that will be priced at the then current market value if and when we decide to sell it. Our business plan does not focus on what our business will be worth when we...

    Expediting companies

I thought a freight broker is the middle-man. When a broker is involved, the shipper does not book the load with a carrier, the shipper books the load with a broker. The broker then finds a carrier to haul that load. Is that not the very definition of a middle-man (middle-person)?

Truck Backing Aid: Getting Your Marks

You make a good point. PRACTICE!!! Once when we were in Laredo, a Schneider driver in a big rig and I got to talking in the lot just after we delivered to adjacent docks. He was brand new and talked about how he had half the people at the truck stop furious with him the night before because he...

Truck Backing Aid: Getting Your Marks

Thank you, but there are nicer people on EO than me. I try, but some of those folks out-nice me by miles and when I let myself go in ways I should not, the standard they set leaves me feeling ashamed of myself.

how many trucks down in TX

Diane and I delivered a load (two skids) in Laredo last Wednesday morning and got a load (three skids) out that afternoon. That load was dispatched to us on the way down. It took us from Laredo took us to Fort Worth and delivered Thursday morning. Soon after that delivery, an agent called with...
