Pilot to buy Flying J - could it be true!

Well, Monday has come and gone and Flying J did not go "on the market Monday." So to answer your question, no, ""Pilot to buy Flying J" is not true. The twice-asked question in this thread remains unanswered. How would Pilot buying Flying J be a victory for truckers?

As GM goes so goes America

Exactly! People who are waiting for things to come back are barking up the wrong tree. There is no back.

As GM goes so goes America

We all knew it was coming but like the anticipated death of an elderly loved-one, it is still sad and painful when it happens. I grew sad listening yesterday to the GM bankruptcy news. The question most on my mind today is not so much about where does America go after GM goes, but where do I...

Missing the Point on Speed limiters

Diane and I shy away from the dark side so we are not attuned to such things, but this thread leads me to wonder; how much of an unlicensed, underground freight-transport market exists or can be expected to exist as this neverending stream of regulations lands on on licensed and...

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

The speed limiter push in the U.S. is coming mostly from the ATA is it not? I might be wrong, but I presume (unresearched) the executives who run and represent the ATA have a big-business, Republican bias.

    Speed Limiter Phone Calls

And while you are sitting near the border in your gleaming, tricked-out, super Sprinter van with your speed-limiter equipment ready, waiting for your next call, you can work the load boards finding backhaul freight for expediters that pay you a small fee for doing so. Rent a parking space and...

    Minnesota driving while fatigue law

See this from the Minnesota Trucking Association. We cannot know from the document that MTA supports the checklist. Reading it, I cannot imagine that they would. If they do, I can only conclude that the whole trucking world has gone crazy. I cannot believe that this thing is being taken...

    Speed Limiter Phone Calls

With the new laws potentially creating new demand for such devices, it may well be that enterprising geeks or mechanics set up mobile services such that for a fee, a car can come to your truck to set and reset speed limiters for U.S. trucks crossing into the two provinces.

We have many more choices than that. Our present choice is stated above.

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

That's exactly what I am talking about when I say "developing situation." Insurance companies will react, over time, to the rules and trucker behavior under them, tossing in yet another variable. Carriers will react to insurance companies as they always have. One of the reasons U.S./Canada...

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

You are correct. We could refuse every Canadian load ever offered and still do a good business. The problem is the carrier rule requiring WG trucks to be eligible to go into Canada, thus the requirement to activate speed limiters for two provinces, whether we ever go to Canada or not.

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

All in good time. Nothing has to happen today, and even if our truck is speed-limited, we are under no obligation to take Canadian freight of any kind. This is a developing situation on several fronts. FDCC has already backed off a bit by announcing that the speed-limiters can be turned off...

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

Not only have we not seen the fines, we have not seen the rules come into existence yet under which the laws will be enforced and fines imposed, and we have made a healthy effort to find them.

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

If they have a lot of sealed Canada freight, Diane and I have not seen it. Checking the Extranet, I see that since 1/1/08, we have accepted six loads in or out of Canada and refused one. From memory, we know three of them were to provinces other than Ontario or Quebec. With the total number of...

    *&^%^ Speed Limiters!!

The issue is with Ontario (and Quebec) first and my carrier second. Had the provinces not passed the truck speed limiter law, there woudl be no issue.
