An open question to owners of unmarked van companies.

Southbound on a freeway yesterday, I saw a white, unmarked Sprinter, clean and in good condition driving northbound. After reading this thread, I had no idea what to think about that van. Before reading this thread, I would have thought nothing about it at all. A white, unmarked van driving...

    Sad day for Panther

I saw nothing in Cheri's post that would reflect negatively on Panther. Yes, this accident involved a Panther truck but so what? Trucks from all carriers are involved in accidents. When a serious accident or fatality is reported here, it is a service to Open Forum readers who will be naturally...

    Any panther van teams?

Minds change, and with them your options. While you absolutely need to respect your wife's comfort zone to succeed as an expeding team, you can surprise her once in a while too. Think about a surprise weekend getaway. Have her pack for a two or three day weekend but don't use your car. Rent...

    Any panther van teams?

It's good to think this through and to make lists. It's not good to commit to a firm personal-gear load plan before you take up life in a van. Commit instead to flexible load planning. Cut yourself some slack. No one gets their personal gear right the first time. It is an ongoing process for...

    Any panther van teams?

That's the way to go, I believe. If you are going to be a team in a van, configure the van to maximize the substantial advantages team driving brings. Another tip is for both of you to get your security clearances as soon as you can after signing on with a carrier. Doing so will greatly increase...

    Any panther van teams?

OMG! You two can sleep anytime you wish and keep the van moving too? And you don't get tired? Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why vans need to be regulated and brought under the hours of service rules. I mean, how can we let this continue? Think of it! A well rested team keeping a vehicle moving...

    TA Announces Reserve-It Parking

Actually, Diane and I understand the parking issue perfectly. We figured it out early when researching the trucking industry. It is one of the main reasons we chose to become straight-truck drivers instead of big-rig drivers.

Cargo vans/Sprinters not welcome at Flying J in Houston

Excellent point! In most domains, how you are treated is not about what's right or fair, it's about how you are perceived. If you accept that fact and present yourself well, you will generally be treated better than if you don't.

    TA Announces Reserve-It Parking

The addition of paid parking spaces at TA truck stops may irritate some drivers but it provides a distinct advantage for others. There are those who have publicly supported paid parking at truck stops and/or expressed sympathy for truck stops that provide all that free parking space without...

    Flat bed straight trucks

So this is a day-cab, flatbed truck with forklift package like lumber yards sometimes have?

    TA Announces Reserve-It Parking

Whether truck stops charge for parking or not, there will still be those drivers who pee in the parking lot and toss their trash on the ground. Indeed, if they pay for parking, they may feel entitled to do it since they help pay for the clean up by paying to park. Or they may do it as a way of...

    TA Announces Reserve-It Parking

Twenty is a lot of spaces. If we drove into a truck stop and saw twenty empty spaces, we would think it was a slow night. What happens at crowed truck stops if the Reserve-It spaces are not spoken for? Do they sit empty all night? I'd hate to be the big-rigger orbiting a truck stop looking for...

    TA Announces Reserve-It Parking

Travel Centers of America Announces Reserve-It Parking Diane and I saw some of those reserved spaces the other day at the Rockwall, Texas, TA. We did not look close but it seemed that about 6 to 8 spaces had been set aside for this purpose and marked with standing signs in each space.

    Flat bed straight trucks

I presume 26' is the length of the bed. How long is the truck itself, bumper to bumper?

What GPS Device Would You Recomend Today?

Thank you all for your replies. I was able to repair our nuvi by doing a software update. Nice to see a company that provides support for discontinued products. With our beloved "Gertrude" now brought back to life, we will keep using this device. It's nice to see the Garmin truck GPS getting...

What GPS Device Would You Recomend Today?

Does anyone know if the power cord for the nuvi 750 will work on the DEZL? We try to keep a neat cab and route cords out of sight. Our nuvi mounts on the suction cup connector which sits on a plastic disk on the top of the dash. The power cord is routed from the suction cup connector down...

What GPS Device Would You Recomend Today?

I should add that the device does not need to be truck-specific. The Garmin nUvi 750 we use now is not and that has not been a problem. Even if a device was truck specific, we would not use many of the features. We keep our own log books and prefer to determine bridge heights on our own.

What GPS Device Would You Recomend Today?

Our Garmin nUvi 750 has served us well but seems about to give up the ghost. Diane and I are now troubleshooting the present device and researching replacement options. Technology changes daily so I thought I'd ask here, what GPS device would you recommend today? Smart phone GPS is not an...

Are drivers using the five keys to the Smith System

Have you ever made a mistake that common sense would have had you avoid? Common sense is not that common, and even among those who have it, common sense is not active at all times. Drivers who believe they are good drivers because they have common sense are kidding themselves. In fact, I would...
