    Sleep apnea

Correct. OOIDA has identified this lobby group and named it "Big Sleep." To understand how sleep apnea rose to become a fashionable topic in the regulatory community, you must also understand how Big Sleep worked behind the scenes to make that happen. Big Sleep sees big money in getting rules...

    Career Change in Progress

Diane and I joined a fitness club a few months ago to improve our health while on the road. Delighted by the facilities and the workout experience they provide, and impressed with the company's business model, we purchased a franchise to build a fitness club of our own (after a good deal of...

    Chef Dennis Follow Up

Glad to hear you made it through this and that you are still on your feet. Your comment about lifestyle changes prompts two thoughts: 1. One of my brother-in-laws knew a bar owner who was obese, enjoyed cigars and did no exercise beyond tending bar. He had a heart attack or blockage or some...

Looking Ahead to Possible Tax & Deduction Changes ... Bad for Expediters

Since money was invented, and perhaps before, governments (even empires) and economies have been rising and falling. A study of nations that have collapsed financially over the last two centuries reveals common developments that, in the present day, are manifesting themselves in the U.S. and...

    Deadhead question

It was not Christmas Day, it was a team at Landstar, fully credentialed, fully equipped, who have learned where the good freight can be found, what agents dispatch it, and have earned the trust of those agents. Establishing ourselves within the Landstar system worked out partly the way we...

Looking Ahead to Possible Tax & Deduction Changes ... Bad for Expediters

Do you have information to verify this? I have been looking carefully for statements by the players that confirm this very thing; that they are talking about personal deductions. But nothing I have seen confirms it. Yes, it stands to reason that the severe impact of a $35,000 deduction cap...

Looking Ahead to Possible Tax & Deduction Changes ... Bad for Expediters

As I said, details are sketchy. A cap on Schedule A deductions would be less threatening but it would also fail to raise the kind of revenue Congress and the president need to raise to reduce the deficit. I keep searching for details about this proposal but find precious few. Yet I know that if...

    Deadhead question

I don't know that being solo or team matters. Deadhead is deadhead. When considering a load, Diane and I do not think about percentage of deadhead. We think about total miles (unloaded + loaded) and total pay for the run. It would not matter if the run was 10 percent empty and 90 percent...

Looking Ahead to Possible Tax & Deduction Changes ... Bad for Expediters

I can offer a general answer to the question. It is that freight rates would have to quickly and dramatically increase to replace the money we would lose by losing deductible business expenses above $35,000. It will take a bit of spreadsheet work to figure out how much rates would need to rise.

Looking Ahead to Possible Tax & Deduction Changes ... Bad for Expediters

The last time I started a post here in the General Forum that had the potential to go political and end up in the Soapbox Forum, it remained here because Open Forum Members did a fantastic job of honoring my request to stay focused on business and off the politics. I thank members for that and...

How's Driving & Freight In the Northeast These Days?

We delivered a relief load in Long Island Sunday night. Later that night we were dispatched on a load that picked up nearby on Monday morning. That load took us to Pennsylvania, so we were in and out quickly. The load out was nothing related to Sandy; four pieces of office furniture being moved...

    Gyms and Health Clubs

Because of the fuel discounts that are available through our carrier, Diane and I go to TA/Petro truck stops almost exclusively, but we are pleased to hear that truck stop fitness centers are appearing at Pilot Flying J too. In August, 2011, Pilot Flying J published this press release saying...

How's Driving & Freight In the Northeast These Days?

Diane and I just completed a delivery on Long Island. Coming from the west (Throgs Neck Bridge), we drove about 1/3 of the way across the Island on the Long Island Expressway (I-495). The delivery was not far from there. Everything was normal. All the power was on. Not even a downed tree was...

Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Business?

Re: Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Busine As I said above, we're only beginning serious research into CARB requirements for our 2006 truck engine and 2006 reefer. Don't take anything I say as Gospel now. That reefer engine hole-drill info came a...

Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Business?

Re: Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Busine I am troubled by that too. Our research is just now beginning in earnest. We have until year-end 2013 before any deadline would affect us. The track CARB now seems to be moving to is that reefers and truck...

Re: Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Busine It is what two reefer dealers told me when we were researching an engine change. One was in MN, the other in TN.

Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Business?

Re: Election Over: What, If Anything, Will You Do Different With Your Expedite Busine I find it offensive too if not outright confiscatory. There is nothing wrong with our reefer now. It is a perfectly good machine. And it was EPA and CARB compliant when we purchased it, then in good faith. I...

How's Driving & Freight In the Northeast These Days?

And what of rates? Those of you who have been working the Northeast, in this thread, Lawrence pointed readers to this article about an expected bump in rates because Sandy and other factors are expected to squeeze capacity a bit, thereby changing the supply/demand equation. Have you seen...
