    Pleasant Surprises in This Business

As Diane and I get to know people in Florida (we have a vacation house there), it seems that many of them really do like to rub it in when they are having fantastic weather and the people in winter states suffer through the season and storms. It is an understandable urge that we try to resist...

    Carrier cutting rates

To be fair to the managers, keep in mind that they actually listened closely to owner-operators when they bought the company. By listening, they quickly learned that there is a large number of owner-operators out there who say "I want to stay busy" and "I want miles." Now, if you are a...

Opportunity to buy truck we drive!

A good next step would be to spend $20.00 to purchase the Partners in Business manual. In it you will find a great summary of the challenges Owner-Operators face, tasks they must do, skills they must develop and sample documents they use to run their business.

Opportunity to buy truck we drive!

If you have been in the business a while and have been driving that truck for a while, and if you are "not so sure where to even start," it might be best if you pass on the opportunity to purchase the truck. If you wish to proceed, one of the next steps would be to develop a spreadsheet or do...

    Pleasant Surprises in This Business

I saw a quote recently from someone saying that there are few pleasant surprises in expediting. That got me to thinking and I'm not so sure that is true. If you maintain a mindset that is open to receiving them, there are quite a few pleasant surprises in this business. Last Sunday, we were...

One. Expediter. No Crew. Harlem Shake.

When I use the word "respect" it means the same thing these days as it has in all other days. If it is a precise definition you want, I'll give you the one from Merriam-Webster that is most appropriate for this convesation: "high or special regard: esteem" If you wish, you can go to my post...

One. Expediter. No Crew. Harlem Shake.

That is correct, you do not see the respect. Respect is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't see it, you don't see it, and if I do, I do. There's nothing more to it than that.

One. Expediter. No Crew. Harlem Shake.

Respect for the sense of humor he has. Respect for the entertainment he provides. Respect for the vulnerability to ridicule he shows, and the self-assurance that lies behind that. Respect for the vibe he puts out ... the guy is having fun! Respect for the gift he shared and the spirit in which...

One. Expediter. No Crew. Harlem Shake.

The difference between that dancer and a fitness center group exercise leader is only a difference in degree. In this case it is a very large degree but I can see it. The potential is there.

I see a truck stop flash mob coming! Get 50 truckers doing that and watch it go viral in no time.

Banks No Match for Trucks Where Rigs Pay Twice as Much

I have been skeptical of the so-called driver shortage. I have yet to see any evidence with my own eyes or hear comments about one from shippers. Comments in the article are interesting but I remain skeptical. That said, for the first time ever, it happened this week that two agents called on...

Do you have a sleeper in your truck?

132" ARI. Great size and features for the two of us (husband/wife team). Would not want smaller but this is our last truck. If we were to buy another truck we'd pobably take this truck's sleeper with us to the new truck. It has held up very well and meets our needs.

Might Sequestration be a Boon for Expediters? If So, What Will You Charge?

I spoke with a Landstar agent today whose main business is air freight. His view -- one view among all others -- is that the FAA would close down feeder airports to keep the big ones open. He saw no dramatic difference developing in air freight if sequester occurs. That was an opinion he offered...

Our Freightliner Nightmare Continues. Your Opinions, Please.

That brings to mind a time when fleet owner truck we drove was in a Freightliner shop. They blew it in ordering parts, costing us a day. They then did the same thing again. We were in a hotel across the street. I went over the third morning to be there when the delivery truck arrived to check on...

Might Sequestration be a Boon for Expediters? If So, What Will You Charge?

Actually, that's the point of my post. There may very well be a way that shipment would be considered for ground transport. Now, we have no idea how sequestration will actually play out. It does seem at this point that it will happen come March 1. Speaking hypothetically, and in view of what...

    Fed Ex Orientation

On a serious note, orientation is perhaps the best opportunity you have to learn about the industry and especially about the carrier you are about to begin with. Pay attention. Don't blow it off. Don't look at it as something to sit through to get over with. Many people report being overwhelmed...
