Diesel over the bridge from Detroit is the equivalent of 2 USD per gallon so pretty much a wash if you're using Greenback's. That's mainly due to the Canadian dollar being so weak right now.

That's just my opinion but that van is not set up for highway work.

Ford 5.4's just aren't as efficient as GM but the big difference is the transmission and rear end gearing.
