Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is much older than I thought and I was surprised when I researched the bridge and found that it was built in 1964. The bride-tunnel is over water for 17.6 miles with the depth of water going between 25 – 100 feet.
In all of our years out here we have not had the opportunity to cross this bridge usually due to having hazardous material freight. We are always routed the long way around. This day the stars lined up and we were able to go directly to our next pickup which involved getting to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
I have talked with friends who have been over the bridge many times and have some harrowing stories. One common topic is the wind and I guess it can get ugly going across the water. Not letting truck go across that are not loaded but letting trucks go across the bridge that are loaded very light. The bridge is very high and I cannot imagine going over the edge…
Another one that had my mind racing was crossing the bridge while a hurricane is coming. As high as this bridge is I cannot imagine waves coming up onto the roadway. Being from Arizona huge puddles of water still amaze me I am more familiar with flash floods that come, do damage, and leave.
I did not think the toll was as that bad using EZ PASS the toll was $17.00 and the scenery was spectacular. I believe the George Washington Bridge is almost that expensive for a straight truck and we get beat to death on that bridge. We enjoyed our trip and look forward to doing it again on a nice day.
