Well chances are unless they make big changes they just might be without a job for a long time to come....

And some think barry doesn't really care, as long as his policies get enacted...

Is there really a recovery on the horizon?

By Steve McCann
American Thinker: Is there really a recovery on the horizon?

On October 2 the U.S. Labor Department released its September 2009 jobs report. The sycophants in the mainstream media breathed a sigh of relief that only 263,000 people lost their jobs and the unemployment rate went up a slight .1%. Per the same Labor Department report the current labor force is: 154,006,000 and those employed are 138,864,000, thus the unemployment rate of 9.8%.

However, per a projected Labor Force Change Report the Labor Department predicts the labor force will be 157,721,000 by the end of 2010 and 162,822,000 by the end of 2015.

To maintain the same unemployment rate as we have now (9.8%) the economy would have to create over 3,000,000 new jobs by the end of 2010 and 7,700,000 new jobs by the end of 2015. (Note 1)

This cannot be done as long as the private sector is hamstrung by new taxes and regulations and the annual government deficits continue in the near trillion dollar range for the next ten years.

In recent days there have been headlines, articles and proclamations by the Obama Administration stating that the recovery has begun and the economy has hit bottom. They point to the stock market rebound as a major indicator that the country is on the road to recovery. However, many of the companies listed on the major exchanges have seen recovery in their profits due to a reduction in costs (e.g. job cuts) and the rapidly sinking value of the dollar inflating their overseas operations measured in dollars. The banking and financial sector's improvement has come at the expense of the American taxpayer and borrower.

This Administration is adept at Orwellian double-speak, so perhaps they will succeed in promoting an economic oxymoron: a jobless recovery. That is what we are faced with today as businesses both large and small continue to sit on the sidelines. Unfortunately, those in the Obama hierarchy, most of whom have no hands-on business experience, fail to understand that job creation and business expansion depends, in great part, on the knowledge that there will be a stable economic environment for the foreseeable future. The more cynical among us might say Obama and his underlings are aware of this but are so determined to pass their radical agenda they do not care.

As long as the Euro-socialist policies of this Administration are pursued or passed, uncertainty will reign supreme and the necessary jobs will not be created as we watch the rest of the world experience economic growth.

The current budget, as approved by Congress, averages nearly a trillion dollar annual deficit for the next ten years. That despite the largest proposed tax increase in our history, virtually all of which will fall on higher income earners and businesses. However, as reflected by the annual deficit levels, taxes will have to be raised even more in the coming years as those budget shortfalls will be unsustainable. We will have entered into a vicious cycle where higher spending will require higher taxes and higher taxes will reduce tax receipts to the government and cash available for business expansion thereby perpetuating a never ending downward spiral unless government spending is greatly curtailed.

In Congress and the White House there exists a determination to involve government in the day to day activity of businesses large and small, whether by passing new laws (e.g. Cap and Trade, Health Care Reform, Union Card Check), issuing more invasive regulations, making veiled or direct audit threats or holding public hearings to demonize capitalism as a whole. As long as this excessive government involvement continues, the engine of business that produces virtually all the jobs (and by doing so produces the government's income stream) will operate at a level barely sufficient to stay in operation, look to relocate off shore if feasible and find ways to minimize costs (labor being the largest), and wait out the storm until some sanity returns while hoping the damage done to the economy is not irreversible.

The Chinese have sent many direct and powerful messages to our Treasury Department concerning our profligate spending and borrowing. China has started to sell some of the bonds it holds and has begun to dramatically reduce the level of debt it buys from the United States as compared to a year ago. In order to obtain the trillions of dollars the Government will need, interest rates will have to be raised to entice overseas lenders and more money must be borrowed from the citizens of the United States. This will reduce the amount of capital available to invest in new ventures and start-up companies. All the while, as a result of the borrowing by the Treasury and the printing of money by the Federal Reserve, the specter of runaway inflation looms on the horizon.

The solution to the employment crisis we are facing was formulated by Ronald Reagan in the early 1980's. In 1983 the unemployment rate peaked at 10.8%. Within 2 years it was down to 7.3% and within 4 years 6.6%. President Reagan slashed taxes on income and capital, controlled spending, promoted the virtues of capitalism and limited the regulatory efforts of the bureaucracy. This triggered a 25 year period (1983-2008) of the greatest economic growth in the country's history.

On the other hand, in the 1930's the jobless rate averaged 18.7% over a ten year span. (1931-41) During this period the government dramatically increased taxes and spending, created numerous new laws and regulations to hamstring business, demonized capitalism and granted nearly unlimited powers to unions. Only with the onset of World War II did job creation begin.

Despite the lessons of history we are again pursuing the policies of the 1930's with potentially similar results. The current Administration, Congress and their sycophants in the mainstream media have been successful in their demagoguery of the business community and capitalism for all manner of perceived sins while touting government as the solution and creator of all good things; but government cannot create wealth or jobs. As a society we are about to enter into a high unemployment environment for many years to come as our economy stagnates under the weight of oppressive government and what recovery there will be will be limited to large multi-national corporations in bed with Washington. There is no recovery on the horizon for the rest of us.

Note 1: Assume 10% of the 2010 projected labor force is unemployed (157,721,000 x .90= 141,949,000 employed) less September 2009 actual employment (141,949,000 - 138,864,000 = 3,085,000)

! was talking with a young guy a few weeks ago, he was a recent college grad and he was tending bar and not able to use his degree in "Human Resources" and "Business Managemnet", nothing over the top that would demand a upper income to begin with. But he can't find a job.

so while we were talking i asked him how many others did he think was in his same situation...he said has far as he knew (and he admitted that he didn't really know) alot of new grads can't find work in their degreed area. Now this isn't really nothing new, its been going on for years this way...but what is new and i haven't seen a thing about it is that with all of these unemployed people being figured each week, are they figuring those that are ENTERING THE WORKFORCE FOR THE 1ST TIME!?! I doubt they are.....so there we have a totally new group f people that are NOT reflected in the governments fake numbers and their efforts to make the people feel that they are working to fix the problems....it ain't happening.....

Yeah my brother lost his job as part of the plant he worked at went to the US. No it did not add to the US workforce just stopped a few more job losses there. Daughters job got axed as well as her outfit cut back. Bro has had zero luck in finding a job at all and daughter has had a couple of short term positions (ended now). Seeing same thing at many customers.
Only one place we haul out of has been busy over the last year and in fact they won another large contract so no layoffs, no extra days off and in fact new equipment, more tools and revamped work areas.

Its my understanding that the economy being as large as it is takes years to change. Look at this Graph Henry Blodget: The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever ,and if Im not mistaken Bush handed out the first Stimulus package in Feb of 2008. It was a $300 to $1200 refund and that was to little to late. In fact most of that money was spent at WalMarts buying Chinese crap. the only people who benefited from that were the Walmart stock holders. we all know how much of the Walmart profits get back to the employees. A couple months age I had seen a bumper sticker that read " When Bush took office gas was a 1.68 per gallon." If I took that amount and adjusted it for inflation for the 8 years it was the current price of gas at the time and not the 4.50 plus we were paying when bush was in office. the funny thing about that is the gas prices were not driven up by a open free market but by oil speculators or so I've heard. If that's true or not I really don't know but It does seem funny that as bush left office gas prices went back to normal. I really think the economy slowed down so much because of the high gas prices.

My little sis lost her job earlier this spring when the small trucking company she was manager for 'down sized' and 'did away' with her position. Truth be told, the owner of the company had her train his college drop out son for months then once he was trained to run the business, they did away with her position. Scumbags!
She was lucky enough to find another manager job with another small trucking company 2 months later. She also recently got a job working weekends in a greenhouse. She has to work 2 jobs in order to pay her bills and survive.
As she says, she will pick up returnable cans & bottles on the side of the road if that's what it takes to pay her bills and survive.

The big RIF is in effect for all the services. The powers to be are calling for a 25% across the board force Reduction in the the military services of all Branches. The 25% man-do force reduction cant include person already scheduled to get out that are retired or those whom have hit HYTY.
In the 90s and 2000-2001 it came out now its once again back.

When that happens this country will have a wind fall in flux of out of work people.
If you can remember after the gulf war when Clinton took Presidency the Big RIF and how the influx affected the Economy well people get ready as its going to happen again this coming year..

something to think about.

I know alot of people and some family who have graduated college and cannot find a decent job, yes they can find a job, but not for what they were in school for. I feel bad for them, it's not like they haven't tried.

You know my sympathy has wained for those who were warned not to count on college as a way to get a in their field.

Many don't actually do their own research, they depend on people who read the DoL's tables of up and coming jobs.

It is like the trucking thing, now we have a glut of drivers but they are saying next year there will be a shortage of drivers. Last night one of the news programs talked about trucking as a career to get into. They had 5 minutes on what the projections are going to be and so on. So why promote something that already has a glut? are we going to see an increase in trucks on the road in the next year of two fold?

After 6 long and frustrating years of being unemployed, I have to say part of the problem with entering the job market is the fact that many of the people who are looking for work with experince out number the people coming out of college. People like me are undercutting the ones who are going to be new hires and this is only caused by the education system itself and how it fails college aged people.

Point isn't if they should have went to college or not , the poit i was getting at was that most are now entering the job marjet for the very 1st time, other then summer jobs, or part time work or work under the table and most have not been counted in the work force...so since they are entering the work force for the 1st , and not findng anything, chances are that are NOT
getting governement assistance that would let them be counted as UNEMPLOYED.....so they are not reflexed in the fake number that the gov puts out....Iam not sure if they are in the U6 number or not, i'd bet for sure that are not in the reported number.

I don't care if they find work in the field they chose or not, or that they even went to college, i don't care one way or another about their employabilty...thats their own propblem, even those with college degrees become unemployed.....

Good points . And how about all those trucking school graduates that briefly work for carriers and are rejected by trainers or are terminated for a minor violation ? In many states the conditions of the termination prevent them from collecting unemployment . Then add the ones foolish enough to quit a job and go to truck driving school then can't get hired . Since they quit their last job they can't collect unemployment benefits .
Then you have all the underemployed - people cut back to 4 day weeks or drivers only getting 1000 - 1500 miles a week at rolled back pay scale .
