We were sitting down south on Friday afternoon adding up dwell time going into the weekend.

This opportunity came across:

Pick up - 15 miles away.
Deliver - Anchorage,AK

Total miles: 4333 Total Pay: $9,000.00

Would you take it?
Would you decline? Why?

Our owner preferred not sending our expensive truck across the Alaskan Hwy in winter. The risk to the equipment and the prospect of tremendous deadhead out was too great.

Love to hear what you owners would do and how many have done that route before in winter.

One of my favorite movies is "Into The Wild" so the temptation was great.

well, i might, how much was the fuel surcharge, would it cover deadheading back down to washington state???

yea, kinda need weight, and vehicle size as well. if it was a cargo van, sure, id drive to californa, hop a ferey, and let the captian do the driving while taking a cruise. now a tractor trailer might be a tad different. cause its just over 2$ pe mile, in the dead of winter, where snowchaines would be required in lots of the drive.

I'm not sure I would want to drive the Alcan in Feb, but the offer would be difficult to turn down. (We also drive for a fleet owner and the final decision on a trip with such a long DH back out again would be the owners)

I have driven the Alcan 3 times, though it was in the mid to late 80's and early 90's, in a personal vehicle and before the highway was redone. At the time that I drove it, it was mostly a gravel road and filled with steep inclines/declines and sharp curves. Now most of the highway has been straightened and is paved. I drove it 2 times during April (4 years apart) and once in March (several years later).

There are miles and miles of nothing but more miles and miles of nothing, especially in the Yukon, so the "scenery" gets old really fast. The biggest thrill for me was seeing the Northern Lights which are beautiful. My ex husband was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage and we drove up to Alaska, and back again to the lower 48 (4 years later). I also flew up to Alaska and drove back to the lower 48 when a friend (also in the AF) was doing a move to a new duty station.

4333 div by 5.5mpg =787.818gal x $3.00= $2363.45
2DHO= Seattle WA 2402 div by 5.5MPG=436.72gal x $3.00= $1310.18 +$2363.45= $3673.63

4333 div by 6.0mpg =722.16gal x $3.00= $2166.50
2DHO= Seattle WA 2402 div by 6.MPG= 400.33gal x $3.00 =$1200.99+$2166.50= $3367.49

45% 0f load is $4050.00

The amount for Fuel is 3bucks I averaged. The MPG is for a Tractor Trailer. Note I figured high on price of fuel Who know's what the Price is up there.

Well if I was going to DH out Alaska to Seattle WA ID Do it.
Good Question !!!!!!
Chains thats where the adventure begins. HG

IRT, hes in a straight truck,it would cost him ruffly 2500 dollars in fuel to go up and dead head back to Seattle.His advance could be 4000 bucks,putting 1500 in his expense pocket,buut this is the wrong time of year to run to AK.You have to have spare chains,tires,and there arent that many truck stops to stop at.You wont ever have to worry about it Kevin,your truck is illegal for Canada,so you wont be abe to get to AK.

you bet ya i would take it.
By the way i know who took that load.
I used to drive that truck
i was looking on you ship, the load board on eo. there is a guy up in Ohio that has 2 crates in Alaska that he wants shipped to Ohio. you might have your friend check into it. even if it paid $1 per mile coming back, it would be worth it. you ship looks kind of screwey, but could make for a very good two weeks.

1 ? $ ???

25 Cents is more appropriate in this case ...

moose, aparently all the bids have canceled. but yea, i saw them. iv never used you ship before. but as an expeditor, all things are negotiable. might be able to talk him up to $1per mile. as his auction is nearing an end. also might have room for somthing else on the truck to go with it.

like i said, iv never used this load board, but it looks like it might work, if you can get the shippers to actualy ship while your trck is in the area.

We might take it but would do some checking first.

Our first step would be to talk to dispatch and ask if we could have more than 10 minutes to evaluate the load. If the answer was no, we would decline the load and offer our best to the truck that gets it.

If more time was granted, we would call three people we know who have made an Alaska run before to get their opinions and learn about additional fees and regulations we might need to be concerned about (we would ask dispatch the same questions). We would check the weather along the route and seriously consider the offer.

If it was in the summer, we might take the load as a vacation trip and take as much as a month off to tour the state. We have never been to Alaska and hear it is spectacular. Getting paid $9,000 to go up there would defer the vacation costs. We would probably take the ferry back if no load back could be found.
