Would love to drive or co-drive during 2 week vaca

I have a class A CDL with hazmat (Texas) and would love to drive or co-drive a straight truck during my vacation coming up on June 5, 2004. I'm thinking of buying a Truck and running out of Texas and would love to get this opportunity to get a taste of this first hand.

Thanks for your post and welcome to EO.

You may not be aware but to get qualified with a carrier can be a daunting task, after your driving, criminal and medical history is verified and you meet their qualifications it may take 2-4 weeks for you to travel to their location and do an 2-4 day business orientation. Not to mention a CDL with a hazmat endorsement - and a Canadian background check.

At this point you will have at least $500 in expenses. Then I think you will find it almost impossible to find a fleet owner who will run you for two weeks.

You expressed interest in getting your own truck. I suggest that your use your two weeks to do some research on our industry. I would start right here on our site.

Best Wishes!

Hi future expeditor.. As you may have read in the past postings driving for a contractor before taking the plunge to purchase your own truck is a very safe and smart idea. Talking with drivers and owners on the road helps, and sometimes confuses the issue. Getting behind the wheel and driving for a contractor for 6 months to a year is going to be the best education you could ever recieve. You will experience both the good times and the bad. You will learn what areas are hot and cold in the industry. I would recommend going with a larger carrier at first to somewhat guarranty your income is stable. And you know the old saying you have 2 ears and one mouth, so you can listen to whats going on twice as much. Everyday, no matter how long you are in this business you will learn something new. The industry is always changing and being a good business man/woman is critical to your sucess. Good luck and let us know whats going on in your life.
