Won't receive the freight

I delivered in Vegas Friday and didn't get a load out that day, so I figured on sitting for the weekend. The other day I saw a local run listed on the Panther bid board, just a 15 mile run across town, and I put in a bid and got it for a darn good amount of money for that short a run. It was picking up at UPS and delivering to another warehouse just a few miles away. So I picked it up early this morning from UPS and brought it to the other warehouse. The receiver didn't open until 6:00 am and I got here a bit early. Right at 6:00 I back up to the ramp, flag down a forklift driver, and he takes the crate off my van. Now I handed him my POD form to get a signature and he said I had to wait for someone to check the freight in. It turns out that the crate is full of something for a trade show and these people wanted the name of the show and the booth number. I called the shipper and got that information so they could verify the freight and sign for it. Then the guy proceeds to tell me that this piece is late and that the things for that show have already been delivered and I'm going to have to take it to the convention center myself.

And that's where things get interesting. I picked up the freight where I was told and delivered it where I was told, and now they're refusing to sign for it and receive it. I'm not going to drive it anywhere else unless there's more money involved and they don't want to pay any more money either. Just now the forklift driver is sitting at the back of my van with the crate and insisting that I let him load it back and I'm refusing to unlock the van and let him put it back there. Since I got the load from Panther, I called them and they agree with me that I shouldn't take the freight anywhere else unless it is contracted as a new delivery and there is more money involved. Since it was picked up from UPS, they're also involved in the conversation at the moment. The forklift driver just left the crate by my back door and told me to let him know when he can load it. I'm not going to unlock my doors and take this anywhere else unless it's as a new run. Now Panther is backing me up pretty good here, and I'm just an outside carrier, not even one of their drivers. Would you all do the same thing in my situation?

Pretty much the same way, except I would not identify the shipper on the internet.

That really wasn't the shipper. The owner of the freight was the original shipper and I never listed their name. So I probably shouldn't have mentioned the folks with the brown trucks?

UPS isn't at fault here. It's the company that's refusing the freight. I won't mention their name. The Panther bid board is a board for outside carriers where they put loads that they can't cover in house. You have to have a login to view the loads on there.

PII's customer in this case was/is Brown, while it is no secret I just would not post the name of p/u or deliveries. Maybe just say that you picked up at a truck terminal. I don't think its a big deal, but you can't get in trouble if you leave out names.

So, what is the site and where do you get this login?
Did you get this situation resolved yet?

ups is not necessarily the shipper. they carried it to vegas. evidently they could not get it delivered on time and my guess is the original shipper put the bid out as pick up ups vegas and deliver to x. now if x says it needs to be delivered to y then either the original shipper or x has to pay the freight. either way someone pays. call dispatch and have them resolve. i am sure you already have done so. don't know how you are going to get recalcitrant forklift driver to sign for product. maybe his super?

Problem solved. After a few phone calls and a bit of negotiating, I managed to get an extra $100 to take it straight to the convention center and I'm working on detention pay as well. This might turn out to be a profitable little morning. It was only 9 miles to the convention center and I've already finished and I have a revised rate confirmation from PII for the extra money. All things considered, it worked out ok in the end.

Speaking from experience, I have never gotten a good load off the Panther board when there was another Panther van in the area. I've gotten some short ones that the Panther drivers turned down, but when that happens they have to pay me more than what they would have paid their driver. It's in their best interests to move their freight with their own drivers. Farming a load out costs them more, so I believe they probably make every effort to cover a load in house before putting it on the bid board.

hk, you were somewhere, then went to bolt then went to panther and they didn't load you. is that what you are saying? here is another question, was it a sprinter?(irony of ironies if true)

I take great issue with the above reply.

Turtle,

I surely mean no offense to you. What is your issue with my comment? My comment was directed at the fact that any such website with any carrier is indeed not the business of any of it's contractors. Throughout the freight market as a whole, there is cooperation between carrier companies. This is nothing new to the industry. Even if you found a URL that hoped to satisfy your curiosity, you would not be welcomed to view it without the proper credentials. Hence, it is "nunya...business."

Rest easy, I was not offended. I merely take issue with the simple "nunya" without explanation.

"Nunya" is one small step away from "because I said so", neither of which is very helpful to people, both posters and lurkers, looking for information on a Web site that stands as The Expedited Freight Information Center. If you're going to tell someone in the expediting business that the URL of a Web site that is expedited-related is nunya, the least you can do is explain to them why it's nunya, or perhaps follow it up with a neener, neener, neener. While 'if you don't already know it, you don't need to know it' may be true, the simple one-word "nunya" makes the determination that every reader of the site has no business going to a site that they have no login for, even if they are curious enough to want to go there and waste their time, anyway. That's all. :)

You only get a login for that board if you are an outside carrier with a partner agreement with Panther.
