I delivered in Vegas Friday and didn't get a load out that day, so I figured on sitting for the weekend. The other day I saw a local run listed on the Panther bid board, just a 15 mile run across town, and I put in a bid and got it for a darn good amount of money for that short a run. It was picking up at UPS and delivering to another warehouse just a few miles away. So I picked it up early this morning from UPS and brought it to the other warehouse. The receiver didn't open until 6:00 am and I got here a bit early. Right at 6:00 I back up to the ramp, flag down a forklift driver, and he takes the crate off my van. Now I handed him my POD form to get a signature and he said I had to wait for someone to check the freight in. It turns out that the crate is full of something for a trade show and these people wanted the name of the show and the booth number. I called the shipper and got that information so they could verify the freight and sign for it. Then the guy proceeds to tell me that this piece is late and that the things for that show have already been delivered and I'm going to have to take it to the convention center myself.
And that's where things get interesting. I picked up the freight where I was told and delivered it where I was told, and now they're refusing to sign for it and receive it. I'm not going to drive it anywhere else unless there's more money involved and they don't want to pay any more money either. Just now the forklift driver is sitting at the back of my van with the crate and insisting that I let him load it back and I'm refusing to unlock the van and let him put it back there. Since I got the load from Panther, I called them and they agree with me that I shouldn't take the freight anywhere else unless it is contracted as a new delivery and there is more money involved. Since it was picked up from UPS, they're also involved in the conversation at the moment. The forklift driver just left the crate by my back door and told me to let him know when he can load it. I'm not going to unlock my doors and take this anywhere else unless it's as a new run. Now Panther is backing me up pretty good here, and I'm just an outside carrier, not even one of their drivers. Would you all do the same thing in my situation?
