Winter's over. . . . NOT!

This was our April 18th spring day:

0800 I-70 east closed at x180 Vail, CO due to snow.

0930 Opened with chains required.

1000 I'm standing there admiring my shiny (never been used)
tire chains ready to tackle the mountain.

1000 DOT drives up and shouts "take em off, no more
restrictions.

1015 thru 1300 The drive from hell until we reached Denver!

Lessons learned:

1) Don't put chains away just yet.
2) Yes, chains are required on all 4 drive tires.
3) Skiers have no clue how to drive on ice.

Anybody else having winter fun out there???

PS- Thanks to the Fed Ex Express guy for the impromptu seminar on how to put tire chains on.

Vail and Eisenhower the reasons I NEVER run I-70 West of Denver, be it summer or winter. Too much weather in the fall, winter and spring and too many tourist on the 4 good days of the year.

One day, when you are on layover and really, really, really bored. Get the chains out and give it a practice run. After you do it once, it will make sense.
Learning on the side of the road, in a snow storm with vehicles splashing slush on you. Not fun.

I quess I will ask the dumb question. Why did you go to Denver in the first place? I would have to think there are loads going to another location?

You are correct sir.

This is a coast to coast run starting in CA and ending near Bordentown, NJ with several deliveries and pick-ups along the way.
Unfortunately, I-70 was a necessary evil in accomplishing the overall goal without a major re-route.

Then it would have been worth the effort. A load from just CA to CO I would have scrapped.

It's also good to do a dry run with any new set of chains to make sure the ones you have fit the vehicle you are running. A warm, dry parking lot is a much better place to discover that the chains were not properly sized or has parts missing.
