The numbers vary from year to year, but stays within a range of generally 8-10 percent. What numbers, you might ask? It's the number of police officers killed with their own or another officer's department-issued firearm by someone who took the gun away from the officers.
Hey now ... that's just not fair ... facts and all ...

You really need to scope out that video of the Texas Open Carry Clown Posse ... and you'll see the light.

It should put your mind totally at ease and show there's absolutely nothing to be worried about, as long at that highly trained crew is manning the ramparts ...

Obviously the only safe and sane thing to do is to capitulate, to admit defeat, to leave guns where they belong, only in the hands of criminals. We must never confront them and attempt to save ourselves, our loved ones, or other innocent law abiding citizens. Nobody, including police, should be armed. It's in their best interest to be safely unarmed.

I have NO problem disarming the police. Governments should never be armed. Governments were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions of people in the 20th century and there is NO sign of them stopping. Instead of making criminals out of law abiding citizens we should be locking up criminal politicians who are free to murder at will.

Works pretty well in Great Britain.

There is no way to compare the United States to Great Britain. Our histories are far too different. We should only concern our selves with what takes place here. We are not Europe or Asia. Nothing is comparable.

Ummm ... help me out here ... just how would that work with the military, who are, of course, part of the government ?

Another bridge selling opportunity. And at one point there was such hope for an enlightenment.
When ya can't address the facts and the substance, might as well go with a little deflection and diversion, right ?

TEXAS 'OPEN CARRY' MORONS STAND THEIR GROUND AGAINST SISSYPANTS LIBERALS AT THE NRA

by DOKTOR ZOOM

Yesterday we brought you the story of the NRA's suggestion that Open Carry Texas might want to tone it down a bit. The merry bands of gun fondlers who have done so much to endear themselves to Texas fast-food customers, the NRA said, may actually be harming the cause of Guns Everywhere by scaring the bejeezus out of people. Well, by golly, the brave gun humpers of Open Carry Texas are not going to stand for that, so they have issued a blazing response of good old-fashioned frontier gibberish and telling the NRA to go get stuffed. But not at any taxidermist that advertises in American Rifleman.

Let us tell you, brothers and sisters, Open Carry Texas has had it with those uninfomed sissypants liberals at the NRA and their messing around in business what isn't theirs to be messing around in:
It is unfortunate that an organization that claims to be dedicated to the preservation of gun rights would attack another organization fighting so hard for those rights in Texas. The fact is that the NRA hasn’t been able to get open carry passed in Texas since the right was first taken away from us when Jim Crow laws were passed in the 1860s, making us one of only 5 states where it is still illegal. The NRA has refused to learn for themselves how Open Carry Texas (OCT) conducts itself other than what the liberal media and Bloomberg funded gun control extremists have falsely portrayed.

Yes, why should we trust videos posted by members of Open Carry Texas showing them proudly strapped for battle as they set up a perimeter around a Chili's? Once those videos get re-posted somewhere else, they become liberal propaganda!

Besides, doesn’t the NRA know that Open Carry Texas has already handled this: WAY back on May 23, they issued a statement calling on their members to stop going into restaurants while carrying, and so by golly, the problem has been solved. After all, that video from Memorial Day of gun humpers following a former Marine around and taunting him and threatening to ruin his business was all outdoors, not in a restaurant. Likewise their big Gun-a-palooza at a Dallas-area Home Depot. So you just be quiet, NRA, because "the whole world is aware of that" change in tactics.

Open Carry Texas then made it clear exactly who’s the real enemy of gun rights: those wimps at the NRA.

The more the NRA continues to divide its members by attacking some aspects of gun rights instead of supporting all gun rights, the more support it will lose. Already, OCT members are posting pictures of themselves cutting up their life membership cards. If they do not retract their disgusting and disrespectful comments, OCT will have no choice but to withdraw its full support of the NRA and establish relationships with other gun rights organizations that fight for ALL gun rights, instead of just paying them lip service the way the NRA appears to be doing. The NRA should have instead released a statement to the effect that it applauds our groups for coming together and finding new methods to promote safe and responsible open carry.

Also, too, the OCT Facebook page has been proving, despite the NRA’s cruel accusation that scaring people isn't "neighborly," that they are in fact terrific neighbors, because they feed the homeless and adopt highways.

Yr. Wonkette is, of course, very very sad to see such close friends fighting. Maybe if a delegation from Open Carry Texas were to insist on barging into the next NRA Convention packing heat?

I'm sure this action by OCT will resonate like a shot heard 'round the world ... probably kinda similar to that whole "Use Southern-based Carriers" movement that is all the rage these days and has everyone just yapping about endlessly ...

Why do gun owners want to be able to carry guns in the open, especially long guns? I have two friends that are foresters. One is a free-lancer and the other is employed by a large forest products company. Both carry chainsaws in their pickup trucks. The employee even carries a chainsaw in his personal vehicle. I have never seen either one carry a chainsaw into a restaurant, grocery store, church, bar etc. Why are some hellbent on toting guns out in the open?

I think at least some of them want to bring it in for protection. While a chainsaw could be used in some instances for self defense, its not the ideal weapon of choice.

I didn't intend for the chainsaws to be analogous with guns as a weapon. Merely a tool, although it could be used as a weapon as almost anything could. A tool that could save lives. What if a tree fell on a Chilis restaurant? Having a chainsaw at the ready could save lives. A tornado ravages a WalMart while shopping for the latest Duck Dynasty clothing and accessories, cut your way out of the wreckage with a chainsaw. Can't do that with an assault rifle. A man with a wooden leg is chasing his ex-girlfriend trying to do her harm. Whip out the Husqvarna. Problem solved with little or no bloodshed and no danger to innocent bystanders.

My point is why carry open into a restaurant or other place of business. If people are so afraid for their safety then they should get a conceal-carry permit and pack a pistol or small folding saw.

Ok , I thought you were drawing a comparison with chainsaws, (and in a previous post, work ladders) and guns. Your friends with the chainsaws probably wouldn't bring them in the restaurants because they would be dripping oil and wood chips everywhere, and stinking up joint with the smell of gasoline. A waitress could slip on the oil and drop the entire serving platter and ruin someone's meal.
Your referenced chainsaws and ladders as work tools(which they are) not normally used for protection. Guns in the general public aren't normally work tools. They are used for protection .
As to your last point, yes they should just get a ccw permit.

I heartily recommend the Corona unit pictured below - which I personally own - it's truly great piece of kit.

In fact, I used it on a young oak last night that has been repeatedly threatening and attacking me during mowing operations. The Razor teeth make for very rapid delimbing:

The following statement issued by the NRA probably represents the viewpoint of the vast majority of gun owners in the US:
...Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms.

Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.

As a result of these hijinx, two popular fast food outlets have recently requested patrons to keep guns off the premises (more information can be found here and here). In other words, the freedom and goodwill these businesses had previously extended to gun owners has been curtailed because of the actions of an attention-hungry few who thought only of themselves and not of those who might be affected by their behavior. To state the obvious, that's counterproductive for the gun owning community.

More to the point, it's just not neighborly, which is out of character for the big-hearted residents of Texas. Using guns merely to draw attention to yourself in public not only defies common sense, it shows a lack of consideration and manners. That's not the Texas way. And that's certainly not the NRA way.

In summary, NRA certainly does not support bans on personalized guns or on carrying firearms in public, including in restaurants. We think people are intelligent enough to resolve these issues in a reasonable way for themselves. But when people act without thinking, or without consideration for others – especially when it comes to firearms – they set the stage for further restrictions on our rights. Firearm owners face enough challenges these days; we don't need to be victims of friendly fire.

Yup ... but it don't represent the viewpoint of the extremist, fanatical gun fondlers ... you know:

... the folks who believe that they, somehow - probably by Holy and Divine appointment - have been elected, along with their AR (at least in their own minds) to be the new sheriff in town ...
