Why it's important to use wheel chocks

This happened today at the local crossdock. The driver forgot to set his airbrakes and didn't use the wheel chocks. The straight truck rolled across the lot, good thing nothing was in front of it. The forktruck driver was okay but shook up.


Always use wheel chocks and always check your brakes, somebodies life could be lost because of a stupid mistake.

Very good tip, because in life we sometimes get in a rush and things we normally would of done, just gets forgotten about. So, I made a very important step once I back up to a dock, I get out of the truck, chock wheels and lower legs. Its a habit enforced on myself to make it safe for everybody.

I imagine it was not a fun job getting that fork lift back where it belongs! How could someone not remember to set the air brakes at the very least? That should be something automatic when you stop. I love to hear the kshhhhhhh sound when they are set.

We were in Charleston SC recently. We took the "trolley" in the downtown area. I noticed each time the driver stopped to let someone on or off, she set the air brakes. Must be transit authority rules.

No kidding, I find myself reaching for it in my car it is such a habit. And I agree on the kshhhhhhh a truck just isn't a truck without it.

just a note to the vanners that wally world sells heavy duty plastic wheel chocks. there was a post by the rev many moons back about loading vans. he mentioned leaving the van in neutral and setting the parking brake. that way when the forklift bumps the truck it does not rock on the "in park" tranny. the wheel chocks would be an excellant addition to van equipment.

If you've ever seen the park mechanism on an automatic you have to wonder how many time it can hold up to nudges from a 5000+ forklift

never seen it but i have seen my van rock. i use the neutral trick but the parking brake just does not hold tightly. since the truck is in the shop i will have the parking brake adjusted.

I don't put my van in neutral, but I do stand at the back and make sure they know I"m watching closely! As they're putting the skid in, I will very 'obviously' watch the bumper, and tell them, "OK... you're gonna have to set it down and relift it"

I'm just rude like that.

Nothing rude about it Dale,it's called watching out for the "moneymaker".

There have been many times that I have stood in the entryway to the cargo area of the truck and stopped the towmotor operator when they show tendencies of recklessness.

I always give them the same speech,"this is MY truck,not some company fleet crapbox that no one cares about". That usually works to slow them down and to pay attention.

When you hear a lot of "Wow, the inside of your truck is sure nice", I didn't worry too much about the fork truck cowboys. Then I would listen to stories about the van that was there last week. What a piece of crap that was.
