Why have the Expeditors Expo?

We have been lurkers for a few years now and just decided we really might have something to share.

We read and read and read the expeditors online open forum before decided to attend the expo in 2004. We really read about being financially sound before jumping off the deep end and become expeditors. After attending the Expo in 04 we made the personal decision to buy our own truck and be our own bosses. We feel like we made the right decision and love our jobs.

This year we attended to Expo and helped in a booth. We talked to lots of drivers, and also new people trying to get started. One of the main things we told prospective expeditors to do is become financially sound and jump in. We also told them to really read the Forums. I am beginning to wonder if that was such a good idea after so many negative posts by moderators and drivers. Fuel prices have gone up but I would like to remind everyone of all of the post about being financially sound going into this business. Fuel prices have always gone up and with our company they have just once again raised the fuel surcharge. Due to all of the sound advice that we read about being financially stable we are still doing great, still having a blast, still making our payments, and being very thankful we are no longer in a 9 to 5 job.

Why have the Expo to promote expediting if we are not positive about how we are all making a living? If you are so unhappy with your job maybe it is time to look for something else? Nothing is keeping you here but you.

I agree with you 100%. I run a d-unit white glove and am doing better every month. fuel surcharges are helping also.

I think you are confusing two issues. The first being ones attitude, and the second being the current business climate.

For the ones like you that were on solid financial footing when starting, things are going well. You are continuing to do well with the aid of a decent fuel surcharge and adequate runs.
Those are the folks that will have a much more positive outlook on the business.

Then there is a dark side of reality for many.
Many carriers pay too small of a surcharge or none
lack runs or can only produce non-profit ones for the driver
single drivers trying to run for team oriented carriers.
Under capitalized from the start.
Over bought or financed equipment
health issues
Involvement with a dishonest carrier or owner
lack experience in determining profitability
lack financial discipline whether personal or business

The list could go on. That is why so many preach to really study these forums (archives) to understand what you are getting into. Too many times we hear of these issues and somebody is drained financially, and they just get out. They many times don't have the finances to move to another carrier. And of course, who is good this year, may not be next. We have seen this, time and time again.
Another issue is rates. Operating costs have soared yet the rates are the same as 5 years ago. Certainly something that can't be ignored. That explains high turnover and bankruptcy rates. When competing with other sectors of the economy, it is a tough field to recruit for when wages become simular to other trades.

We are quite happy with our carrier, but are quite aware of what the realities are. I think it is one of those, you have to show both sides. If one only sees the good, then that is all they know. When they at some time encounter some of these bumps, they want to be prepared as bad things can happen to good people who might be uninformed.
