Why didn't someone shoot?

Ask yourself after reading this -

1 - if you had a gun, would you have told him to stop?

2 - if you had a gun, would you have just shot him and worry about things later?

3 - why didn't anyone shoot or stab the guy to stop him?

Police: Officer kills man who beat child to death - AP
TURLOCK, Calif. - Police killed a 27-year-old man as he kicked, punched and stomped a toddler to death despite other people's attempts to stop him on a dark, country road, authorities said.

Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night. The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be between 1 and 2 years old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.
"It's been a long night of wondering, 'Why?' — not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone. Why would somebody do this?" Singh said.

Singh said the coroner does not plan to confirm the identities of the suspect and victim until Monday. Because his injuries were so severe, the child will have to be identified through a blood or DNA test, he said.

The suspect had a child's car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck. The truck caught the attention of an elderly couple at 10:13 p.m. Saturday because it was stopped in the two-lane road facing the wrong direction, Singh said.

As they got closer, the couple saw the man brutally beating the toddler behind his truck and throwing the child on the ground, according to Singh. Two or three other cars stopped, an unusual number to be passing through the remote area surrounded by a dairy, a cow pasture, a cornfield and a farmhouse, he said.

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking," Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect. The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it."

A sheriff's helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area landed in a cow pasture at 10:19 p.m. carrying a Modesto police officer who shot the man to death after he refused an order to stop beating the child, Singh said.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No children within the dead boy's age range have been reported kidnapped or missing in Stanislaus County, Singh said.

The incident happened on Bradbury Road about 10 miles west of Turlock, a city located about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno.

If I had been on the scene and armed I'd have ordered the man to stop. If he did not stop I'd fire one warning shot into a tree trunk or his truck. If he did not stop he'd get 2 to the chest. There's no question to this.

What's sick about it?

I listened to a complete description of what happened, there was more time involved than the article stated.

Our society is supposed to be an enlightened one where there is true justice and no barbaric means of punishment but here we have a case where this could have been stopped earlier but wasn't. We can't stop everything but we can deter things through real punishment and sacrifice. I for one don't believe in paying a debt to society, the debt is only owed to the victim, not society and only when the victim is rightly compensated, that debt goes away. In this case this guy needed to be put down like an animal but it seems that no one had the guts to really get involved, I for one could not stand there telling the guy "you better stop or I will call the cops" but may have taken my 8 pound brass hammer out and do a number on his head. I don't think of the results later on, maybe the reason I am driving this truck instead of having an corner office.

People need to stop and look around and take responsibility, stop depending on the cops in some situations and be prepared to get involved.

The worst offenders to me are the liberal types who want the 'authorities' to step in all the time. They are the true reason that we have come to the point in society that a child can be beaten like this without anyone doing a thing about it.

ok sick is a general reaction term....more to the point as you said WHY in the world didn't anyone step in? People standing there saying "Call 911 someone!" Those people must be real proud they "watched" a child beaten!!

I know myself pretty well and I know I would have stopped the S.O.B in short order by any means at hand.......Like a tire Iron to the Head

I would have treated him like I was taught to treat an escaping inmate by the state of Arkansas. 1 warning shot aimed right at his chest. If no gun I have fists. Uncle Sam taught me this neat chock hold that would put him asleep in 15 seconds and send him to Hades in thirty seconds.
