3. Ford Fiesta ECOnet

10 Cars That Get More Than 40 MPG - MSN Autos

Ford's ECOnetic Fiesta packs a 1.6-liter Duratorque turbodiesel engine that offers more than 60 mpg.

If you were to drive Ford's snappy little Fiesta ECOnetic, you might easily find yourself spending less for fuel each week than you do for coffee. It employs a clean, efficient 1.6-liter Duratorque turbodiesel motor and low-drag body design to achieve a combined city/highway fuel-economy rating of 63.6 mpg, based on European Union standards.

Can Americans buy it? No. Ford says that importing the Fiesta ECOnetic from Europe, where it's made, would be too pricey and wouldn't be met with enough demand. Modern diesel engines deliver roughly 30 to 35 percent higher fuel efficiency than gas-powered engines, and are often just as clean as hybrids. The problem is that diesels must meet the most stringent emissions standards in the world to be sold here in the U.S., and thus automakers are reluctant to go through the costly process of modifying them to be greener and bringing them into a market that is simply lukewarm on diesel power. Folks, diesel is no longer the dirty bird of fossil fuels. We need to give them a closer look.

I'd buy one in a minute

I'm a big fan of Top Gear on BBC America. The diesels in Europe are amazing. Jeremy Clarkson got much better MPG in A Jaguar Turbo V6 diesel than in a Toyota Prius.
My wife has a Honda Civic Hybrid. We usually get mid to upper 40's on it and occasionally in the 50's, if driven correctly.

Did you also see in that episode the Fiat 500 diesel averaged 80 mpg on that same trip?!
That car is now being imported here but of course only in the gas version.

One has to wonder if the Fed Gov and the EPA regulations that they impose on the American auto industry has anything to do with these high mileage diesels not being available here...

Kinda seems that where ever the Fed gov starts to Regulate stuff, the American people get screwed....but i bet they will do a great job with :healthcare....

I have a good friend who operates a Sprinter and lives in the UK. He runs freight all over the UK. He has a 2008 model with nothing but a pvc on it for emission control. Running empty on the Autobahn he can average 33mpg and that's with a long wheel base. His wife's car is a small Chevy something like an Impala and gets 60 mpg with no emissions.
Goes to show you how out Government is ripping us off.

You know I don't think it's found on the road dead, I think it's something like Driver Returns On Foot! That's backwards if you haven't caught that.:D:eek:

LOL couple of points ....

UK do not have autobahns .... thats Germany :)

Chevy is not a car normally seen in the UK, but with that mileage per gallon I bet everyone would want one

UK emissions tests are part of the MOT service that has to be done once a year ...very strict on emissions in the UK.
MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - exhaust emissions

Are you sure you did not mean Europe?

:)
