Which rifle now days

I'm thinking a little bit about a bolt action .223 and wonder who is currently considered the best choice between Remington, Ruger, Savage and Winchester. I like the looks of the Savage model 12 varmint model but wondered if something else is considered significantly better.

I would go with the Mossberg MVP Predator. I like MANY of the features of this rifle. I like the 24" barrel. I also like the owner adjustable trigger. It is chambered for 5.56.X45MM NATO. It also used STANDARD AR 15 magazines, 30 round or smaller. That is a BIG plus.

I'm debating the .223, .22M, .17HMR and good old .22LR. I remember the good old days when ammo for my .22lr was about a penny a round. Now it's all varying degrees of crazy.

Some of my most enjoyable days were out in the field with my dad and brother with an old .22lr

I will always have a 22LR. I am going to "fancy up" my Ruger 10/22 and make it an adult size tack driver. I would take the Mossberg in 5.56MMX45 NATO, it is a very good caliber to have a rifle in these days.

I still love my 1911, 45 and my snub 357 but my old stand-by next to the bed is a dirty 12ga with a 20 inch barrel. Couldn't cut it off anymore because of the slide. It's for getting down and dirty, no sport about it. Wish I had the time to hunt. The only thing we shoot around my house is coyotes, Rattlers and maybe a pig or two. Thought about shooting my X one time but couldn't figure out how to hide the evidence. A 223 is a good all around caliber, must be because we're still winning wars with them.

Yeah, that's the best cartridge to go with in a centerfire and that's a good looking rifle. They're like pets and kids, getting to the point where you have to be rich to afford to feed them.

NO NO NO! The US military does NOT use .223REM. They use 5.56MM NATO. There is a difference. The military load is capable of developing much higher chamber pressures. In SOME lower quality .223REM rifles it is possible to damage the rifle and maybe yourself as well. The "Wylde chamber" is designed to handle both rounds. It is NOT advisable to fire milspec 5.56mm ammo in a .223REM chamber.

The military is also not all that happy with the 5.56mm as their primary round. That is why they are looking at the larger, more powerful, 6.8mm. There is a BIG push to move to that caliber.

It would be a good choice. The 6.8mm "upper' will fit and operate fine on the existing "lowers". The magazine wells on the existing "lowers" will accept the 6.8mm magazine. Moving to that caliber would be far less expensive that other caliber that were being considered. The 6.8mm SPC is again a Remington caliber.

It does look good. The only thing wrong with it is the box magazine. That's ugly and evil looking so they'll demonize it later if not sooner.

It is a ten round pictured, which, at least for now, will remain legal under the "Leaders" rules. In the REAL world, versus the Obama world, the ability to accept standard AR 15 magazines is one of this rifles biggest pluses.

I have a Rock River Arm ATH Carbine ordered, although I have heard NOTHING since I ordered it in Aug last year. The Mossberg will jump up higher on the list if that falls through.

Link to the Rock River I have on order. I ordered the one on the top, the non-compliant one, of course. I like the heavy barrel and the 3/4" MOA. It would be fun to develop a load for that one. One that could make one hole with 5 shots.

Yep, not a lot of choices in bolt action, 5.56mm rifles though, only one that takes AR style magazines.

This is why I load my ammo. After the initial investment in the equipment makes ammunition dirt cheap
